Unique architecture, bowl games and quality education at UTEP
Students can choose from 170 bachelor’s, master’s and doctoral degree programs at the University of Texas at El Paso, also called UTEP. The university is also known as “Bhutan on the Border,” thanks to the Bhutanese-style architecture reflected in many of the university’s buildings. The university has forged bonds with Bhutan since the 1960s and celebrates the kingdom’s culture and traditions during “Bhutan Days,” when Bhutanese performers and artists interact with students and the community. Students also get free tickets to UTEP men’s football and basketball games, including the annual Sun Bowl game. Aside from the university, kids can attend Lamar Elementary School, rated B-minus by Niche, before heading to the B-plus-rated Wiggs Middle School. Teens can graduate from El Paso High School, rated A-minus. Built in 1916, it’s the oldest operating high school in El Paso and is on the National Register of Historic Places. Part of the El Paso Independent School District, the school is often fondly referred to as "The Lady on the Hill" thanks to its location near the base of the Franklin Mountains.

Explore Billy Rogers Arroyo or the International Museum of Art
There’s no shortage of parks, green space and things to do in the area. Panoramic views of the city can be seen from Tom Lea Upper Park, while the lower portion of the park has open green space and a playground. Billy Rogers Arroyo is beloved by hikers, bikers and birders for its native habitats and rugged trails. West Central is less than 18 miles south of Franklin Mountains State Park, where outdoor enthusiasts can enjoy mountain biking, rock climbing and camping. In addition to Sun Bowl Stadium, UTEP is home to the Centennial Museum and Chihuahuan Desert Gardens. Centennial Museum is the oldest museum in El Paso and houses the Lhakhang, a gift from the people of Bhutan to the U.S. West Central is close to several museums, including the International Museum of Art and the El Paso Holocaust Museum & Study Center.

Historic homes of all styles and sizes
Student housing is available close to the university, but there are other residential areas in West Central. “There are a lot of historic homes built in the 30s and 40s, and a lot of UTEP professors and doctors live there,” says Patti Olivas, broker and owner at Dan Olivas & Associates. “There are very unique, funky homes, and a lot of them have been redone.” Many historic homes lack closets and storage space. Styles include ranch, adobe, split-level, Victorian and American foursquare. Homes can range from $215,000 for a remodeled American foursquare to roughly $300,000 for a Victorian home built in 1925. Many homes range from $300,000 to $500,000, although homes with more space can range from $600,000 to about $700,000. Home inventory is limited, as there is not much room for expansion in the area.

Crime
West Central receives a 5 out of 10 on the CAP compared to the overall U.S. score of 4 out of 10. The overall Crime Score is driven by higher-than-average scores for violent crimes, even as El Paso has consistently been recognized as one of the safest large cities in the nation. The Cincinnati Entertainment District near the university’s campus has been recognized as a crime hot spot by the El Paso Police Department. Police have increased patrols in the area and partnered with the county attorney’s office, the Texas Alcohol and Beverage Commission and other agencies to clamp down on crime. “I always recommend calling the local police substation to learn about the area before deciding to move there,” Olivas says.
