Some might say you can never go home again. But residents of Plumcreek Township, a community about 50 miles northeast of Pittsburgh, are proving that adage wrong. “A lot of the people moving in used to live in Plumcreek. They want to move back to their hometowns,” says Rich Gallo, broker and owner of RE/MAX Enterprise, who has sold real estate in the area for 31 years. “And they’re looking for homes with a lot of land.” Those homeowners find what they want in Plumcreek Township, where most homes sit on sprawling, multi-acre lots. Residents use those big yards for gardens, barns and even small farms. Along with vast swaths of green grass, backyards are lined with dense patches of tall, leafy trees, which makes each home feel peaceful and private.
Fixer-uppers and big farmhouses
There are house styles and sizes for just about everyone, including manufactured homes, ranch-style houses and big farmhouses, with prices ranging from $35,000 to $315,000. First-time homebuyers or newcomers ready to take on a DIY project might be especially interested in Plumcreek’s housing options. “There are a lot of older homes that are reasonably priced, and they sell pretty quickly,” says Penny Perman, a real estate specialist with RE/MAX Enterprise who works with Gallo. “It’s a great place if you’re looking for a fixer-upper. Many of the homes are in good shape; they just need a little TLC."
Student-run store at West Shamokin Jr-Sr High
The township's younger residents start their education at Elderton Elementary School, which serves kindergarten through sixth grade and has a B-minus on Niche. They continue to West Shamokin Jr-Sr High School until graduation. West Shamokin Jr-Sr High serves about 590 students, with a student-teacher ratio of 10-to-1 and has a C-plus on Niche. It offers students a chance to run the school store, Wolf-Mart, tasking them with ringing up customers, restocking shelves, and assisting with the inventory.
Catching fish at Keystone Lake
When locals want to get outside, many head to Keystone Lake, in the township’s northeast section. This reservoir offers the chance to catch bass, muskellunge and bluegill, but even non-anglers enjoy taking their boats out and relaxing on the tranquil waters. Locals looking for green space often head to Elderton Plum Creek Park near South Keeler Street and South Lytle Street. This park is a hub of activity on game days as local Little League teams play at the baseball field. Next to the baseball field are tennis courts, where locals work on their serve, and little ones run and play on the grass.
Shopping in nearby Elderton
Shopping within the township is limited but can be found nearby in Elderton. Locals pick up essentials at Dollar General and stock up on groceries at Elderton Country Market. Within the township, they purchase their hardware and farm supply needs at Frazier Brothers, which has been serving the area since 2011. There are also several restaurants in the area, including Farmhouse Market & Bakery in Elderton, which serves freshly baked pastries and espresso drinks, and Fox's Pizza Den, located in the township, which serves hand-tossed and gourmet pizza, hoagies, sandwiches and salads.
Rosebud Mining Company is a local employer
While some residents work nearby at Rosebud Mining Company, located off McCreight Road, and Keystone Generating Station, a powerplant situated near Crooked Creek off Keystone Drive, others take US-422 to commute to nearby towns, or into Pittsburgh, which is about 50 miles away. Gallo says residents don't let Pittsburgh's distance from the neighborhood keep them from working and playing in the city. “As long as you avoid going at rush hour, it’s usually about a 45-minute drive,” he says.
