Farms, subdivisions in the foothills of the mountains
Eldred Township is where the landscape north of Williamsport, Pennsylvania, transitions into a rural community. To the north, hiking trails wind through the mountains, often leading to scenic overlooks of valleys. To the east, anglers hook bass and bluegill from the banks of Loyalsock Creek. Meanwhile, Williamsport and Montoursville, two of Lycoming County’s most developed communities, are less than 5 miles south. Harry Swank says he moved to Eldred in 2022 because his wife "is into the outdoors. We found this house, and she thought it was like an old farmhouse." The Swanks live across the street from a restaurant and have a next-door neighbor, but their community is rural enough that they keep chickens, Swank says. The township of 2,000 people blends rural and suburban characteristics, with roads as likely to be lined with barns as subdivisions.

5 hiking destinations in a short drive
One of Lycoming County’s largest parks stretches across the north end of Eldred: Rider Park. Among its 860 acres, 15 miles of trails weave through forests and meadows. Hikers, trail runners and mountain bikers share the park’s four paths. Within 7 miles of Eldred’s northeast corner, four trailheads put hikers on scenic routes to creeks, streams and waterfalls. Hunting is popular, and State Game Lands No. 298 north of Eldred covers 1,100 acres conserved for hunting deer and turkey. In Montoursville, Indian Park hosts Little League softball games.

Scenic views from Eldred homes
Ranch homes, Cape Cods and Colonial Revivals are grouped into small subdivisions or dispersed on acre-plus lots along two-lane roads. Houses on the east side overlook the trickling waters of Loyalsock Creek and the mountains rising behind it. However, some of those homes are in flood zones, so homebuyers may need flood insurance. Prices typically start in the mid-$200,000s for three-bedroom homes, but they can reach the high $400,000s if a property has a large lot or mountain views. The township’s CAP Index Crime Score is a 1 out of 10, indicating the lowest level of crime possible on the scale.

Innovation Lab added to Loyalsock Valley Elementary
Just across Loyalsock Creek from Eldred, kindergartners through fourth graders learn at Loyalsock Valley Elementary School, graded a B by Niche. In 2023, the school opened an Innovation Lab where kids learn about coding and engineering in a hands-on way. However, the Montoursville Area School District is considering closing Loyalsock Valley Elementary and sending students to Lyter Elementary School, about 5 miles from Eldred. After fourth grade, children head to C.E. McCall Middle School, which gets a B-plus, and B-rated Montoursville Area High School. Both campuses are near Lyter Elementary in Montoursville.

Drinks and live music along Loyalsock Creek
The wood-plank saltbox building that once housed the Warrensville General Store is now home to Grim’s Diner, one of Eldred’s few businesses. Nearby, Warrensville Community Church puts on frequent events such as game nights and movie screenings. On the other side of Loyalsock Creek, Pier 87 serves fish and tiki drinks until 9 p.m. on a sand-covered patio. “They make part of their property a beach,” says Cindy Bender, who lives near the creek and runs Cindy Bee Floral. “They have bands on the weekends. It gets crazy across the creek, but they turn it off at a certain time.” The farther south someone drives down Route 87, the more businesses they’ll see. The highway passes Creekside Country Market sandwich shop and Eder’s Ice Cream on the way to Montoursville. The borough of 4,700 people has a Walmart, Weis Markets grocery store and Lowe’s Home Improvement in its shopping centers.
