A walkable subdivision bordered by parks and retail opportunities
College Green is home to a welcoming community surrounded by ample retail and recreational opportunities. Residents run quick errands on South Randall Road and spend time outdoors at Elgin Sports Complex and The Highlands of Elgin Golf Course. Meanwhile, strolls through the subdivision include trips to College Green Park and running into neighbors who become friends at the neighborhood’s periodic block parties. “It’s a really nice neighborhood in a great location,” says John Holden, a Realtor with @properties Christie’s International Real Estate who has eight years of experience selling in Chicago’s greater northwestern suburbs. “The people there are friendly and all know each other.”
College Green retains a rustic and peaceful atmosphere.

College Green Park's traditional playground and paved trails
College Green Park, situated on the northern side of the neighborhood, is within walking distance of most homes. The open green space park forms a pseudo-barrier between the neighborhood and the Elgin Community College’s Spartan Drive Campus. The park sees most activity in the afternoons when children get home from school and take to its playground and swing set. Its paved walking trails run around the park’s edge and through neighboring townhome complexes, granting visitors a car-free route for walking and biking. The Highlands of Elgin Golf Course’s 18-hole fairway sits northeast on the other side of South McLean Road and backs up to Elgin Sports Complex. Here, athletic fields and baseball diamonds remain busy throughout the week for youth sports practices and fill for weekend games and tournaments. Indoor recreational opportunities include Fox Valley Shooting Range, in the neighborhood’s northeast corner, and Marcus Elgin Cinema a mile north.
The Elgin Sports Complex features eight different baseball fields.

Otter Creek Shopping Center retailers and live music at Old Republic Kitchen + Bar
Shopping developments immediately west along South Randall grant short trips to pick up groceries from Meijer and retail items from Walmart Supercenter. Otter Creek Shopping Center a mile north offers several other big-box retailers, including Target, Burlington and Hobby Lobby. The locally owned Old Republic Kitchen + Bar sits across the street. Many stop into the lively spot to grab a seat on the patio or second-floor balcony to enjoy American eats and live music throughout the week. An array of chain restaurants like Chick-fil-A and Portillo’s also line the corridor.

1990s New Traditional styles
College Green’s streets curve through the community, featuring small cul-de-sacs with grassy tree-studded medians. Running parallel are tree-lined residential sidewalks and occasional streetlights that add to the quiet neighborhood’s pedestrian appeal. “The residents aren’t shy,” Holden says. “They walk around the neighborhood and talk and interact with each other.” Two-car driveways lead to New Traditional and Colonial Revival homes built throughout the 1990s. Commonalities between each include neutral-colored exteriors, front lawns that are kept short, and quarter-to-half-acre lots. These homes typically sell between $300,000 to $430,000. Townhomes with similar architectural designs also stretch along the community’s western and northern sides. Prices range from $160,000 to $300,000, depending on size and condition.

Community block parties and downtown Elgin events
“The neighborhood has block parties from time to time, where they grill out and such,” Holden says. These gatherings offer an opportunity to connect with neighbors, while downtown city-wide events 4 miles northeast bring the greater Elgin community together. The city’s list of annual events includes Nightmare on Chicago Street, a popular Halloween celebration in mid-October, and Holiday Cheers, which runs in tandem with Small Business Saturday on November 30th. Alongside looking at holiday murals painted on the windows of participating businesses, folks can stop into each for themed drinks to ring in the season.

The GreatSchools Rating helps parents compare schools within a state based on a variety of school quality indicators and provides a helpful picture of how effectively each school serves all of its students. Ratings are on a scale of 1 (below average) to 10 (above average) and can include test scores, college readiness, academic progress, advanced courses, equity, discipline and attendance data.
