Running parallel are tree-lined residential sidewalks and occasional streetlights that add to the quiet neighborhood’s pedestrian appeal. “The residents aren’t shy,” Holden says. “They walk around the neighborhood and talk and interact with each other.” Two-car driveways lead to New Traditional and Colonial Revival homes built throughout the 1990s. Commonalities between each include neutral-colored exteriors, front lawns that are kept short, and quarter-to-half-acre lots. These homes typically sell between $300,000 to $430,000. Townhomes with similar architectural designs also stretch along the community’s western and northern sides. Prices range from $160,000 to $300,000, depending on size and condition.

South Elgin High School's Beacon Academy of Media and Digital Arts
Young students enroll at Otter Creek Elementary School, which maintains a B-minus rating on Niche, before heading to Abbott Middle School, which holds a C-plus rating. Meanwhile, older students attend A-minus-rated South Elgin High School. Its campus is home to the Beacon Academy of Media and Digital Arts. The magnet school’s curriculum focuses on media production, where students hone their skills in various fields, from web design and broadcast journalism to audio and visual production. These gatherings offer an opportunity to connect with neighbors, while downtown city-wide events 4 miles northeast bring the greater Elgin community together. The city’s list of annual events includes Nightmare on Chicago Street, a popular Halloween celebration in mid-October, and Holiday Cheers, which runs in tandem with Small Business Saturday on November 30th. Alongside looking at holiday murals painted on the windows of participating businesses, folks can stop into each for themed drinks to ring in the season.
