Proximity to Elgin Community College & Randall Road

The community of College Park McIntosh was aptly named for its proximity to Elgin Community College, located less than a mile south of the neighborhood. “As an alum myself, I can speak to the impact the college has on the local community,” says Ryan Cortez, a representative of the Elgin Visitors Bureau. “It’s an open campus, so those that aren’t students can still come through the stores and utilize the resources we offer.” A common choice for Larkin High School graduates, the community college is one of the city’s largest employers, according to local news sources. But beyond higher education, College Park McIntosh offers additional proximity to some of Elgin’s most frequented big-box shops and restaurants on Randall Road. The bustling thoroughfare borders the neighborhood to the west, keeping residents close enough to the city’s industry without the accompanying noise.

Elgin is preserving the Hawthorne Hill Nature Center

As of 2024, Elgin has plans to improve a handful of outdoor recreation spots throughout the city, including Hawthorne Hill Nature Center. Located a mile up the road, this 67-acre natural area offers woodchipped trails, a fishing pond and an interactive nature center with family-friendly play areas. As part of its improvement plans, the city allotted funding to enhance and preserve the park’s natural habitat. To the east, the Elgin Sports Complex is a 407-acre park hosting local soccer, softball and T-ball leagues. The facility’s BMX track and volleyball courts will soon accompany additional athletic fields and walking trails set for completion in 2025. The Highlands of Elgin Golf Course is next door, an 18-hole course with a practice facility open to the public year-round.

Nightmare on Chicago Street brings thousands of guests to Elgin

Downtown Elgin is a popular hub for annual events and festivities, particularly at Festival Park. Food, history and the arts come together at the annual Juneteenth celebration, hosted by The African-American Coalition of Kane County. As the summer ends, La Fiesta de Elgin honors Mexican Independence Day with live mariachi music, local artisans and programming at The Hemmens Cultural Center. Nightmare on Chicago Street draws in thousands of guests from across the suburbs. “It’s one of the largest Halloween festivals in the country,” Cortez says. From live performances to themed drinks and spooky actors, it’s one of the city’s most anticipated evenings. “The local bars and restaurants stay open and cater their menus to the theme,” he continues. “So you’ll see all these creative food and drink options that aren’t normally offered throughout the year. A vast majority of people dress up in costumes, too.”
