Within five miles of the neighborhood, residents can shop and dine at spots along South Randall Road or take the train to Chicago from the Big Timber Metra Station. Residents play outside at the community’s namesake park or nearby Wing Park, a larger park ground with volleyball and tennis courts, a golf course, baseball fields and an aquatic center. Meanwhile, city-wide events like the Downtown Elgin Market and Nightmare On Chicago Street foster a greater sense of community.

Split-level and ranch-style homes from the 1960s and 70s
Eagle Heights' residential streets branch off Royal Boulevard, the community's main road. “Most of the homes in that area were built in the 60s and 70s and are an eclectic mix,” says Carie Cox, Realtor with Suburban Life Realty and longtime Elgin resident. Along each neighborhood street, residents stroll along narrow sidewalks underneath old-growth deciduous trees. Homes atop quarter- to half-acre lots sit at the end of two-car driveways leading to two-car garages and shrub-filled lawns. Though ranch and split-level-style homes make up most of this community, aside from a series of apartments on the northeastern edge, architectural designs vary, from vinyl, wood-clad and stone exteriors to occasional front façade fireplaces and l-shape layouts common in older midwestern farming communities. Prices generally range from $285,000 to $400,000, depending on size and condition.

Here, little ones explore a set of playgrounds and run loose in the park’s open field. Here, visitors race down a pair of swirling flume slides, wade throughout the pool and play pick-up matches on the beach volleyball court. A mile west, Bumblebee Play Café is a privately operated indoor playground with a rock-climbing wall and jungle gyms. Located in a suburban-style shopping center with a massive parking lot, the Play Café sits between the Duet Dance Academy studio and Athletes HQ, an indoor baseball and softball training facility.

Downtown Elgin's annual events
Downtown Elgin Market, held 3 miles southeast, lines Riverside Drive with the stands of local vendors selling fresh produce and handmade goods every Friday afternoon from June through early October. A few weeks later, the City of Elgin hosts Nightmare On Chicago Street. The event transforms downtown Elgin into a post-apocalyptic setting, where local businesses board up and zombies take to the streets. Those in attendance catch exciting live performances, from musical concerts to fire dancing and wrestling matches. “They go all out and make things super creepy, and everyone dresses up,” says Cox. “People who have been love it and put in on their calendar year after year.”
