Across the Fox River from downtown Elgin
On the west side of the Fox River, about a mile from downtown Elgin, the Grant Park neighborhood is close to many recreation options, including riverfront walking trails and the oldest 9-hole municipal golf course in Illinois. The Fox River flows by the downtown area and divides the west and east sides. “The east side of Elgin has felt more city-like,” says Elizabeth Oine, a broker at Compass Real Estate who grew up on the east side of Elgin. “The homes on the west side of the river are more beautiful. I always equate the west side with majestic houses. When I was a girl, my doctor worked out of a Victorian house in this neighborhood.”
Homes in Grant Park from the first half of the 20th century
There’s an older stock of housing in Grant Park, mostly built from the 1930s through the ‘50s, but a few homes from the 1800s have been renovated. Colonial Revival, ranch-style, National Folk and post-World War II Minimal Traditional houses are priced from $190,000 to $420,000. A few exceptionally large and well-maintained historic homes reach up to half a million dollars. “Elgin has always been an affordable area,” Oine says. “You’re not going to get high prices until the far west side of the city.” Duplexes and other multifamily dwellings run from $275,000 to $350,000. On average, the homes in this neighborhood sell after about 20 days on the market. The CAP crime score index for the neighborhood is 5, slightly above the national average. The houses in this neighborhood are in an urban area, so they rank as active on the sound score index as tracked by First Street, a website that focuses on various environmental factors.

The golf course is part of the larger Wing Park
Some houses in the neighborhood have a view of the Wing Park Golf Course. Opened in 1908, the course was added to the National Register of Historic Places about a century later. While the 9-hole course is popular with those who want to hit the links, it’s just the tip of the iceberg regarding recreational options. To the west of the course, the 121-acre Wing Park has lots of open space, a forested area with trails that go by Taylor Creek, which flows on the park’s west side. There’s also an outdoor amphitheater that seats 300 people and hosts concerts throughout the summer. The aquatic center has two water slides, a sand volleyball court and a children’s swim area. “I spent a lot of time there as a kid, and I worked there as a lifeguard as a teen,” Oine says. On the northern side of the park is a Little League baseball complex. Grant School Park is a nearly two-acre site on the site of a former school with a playground and a small skate park.

Elgin U-46 School District
Highland Elementary School is a dual-language school, meaning instruction in English and Spanish is given to kindergarten through sixth-grade students. Niche gives the school a C-minus. Kimball Middle School is rated a C on Niche, and Larkin High School receives a C-plus. Larkin High School athletic teams have a long-standing rivalry with Elgin High School, pitting those on the west side of the river against the east side.

Mexican food at Canelita’s
On a triangle-shaped lot off Highland Avenue, one of the neighborhood’s main thruways, Canelitas Mexican Restaurant Is a neighborhood eatery with a small parking lot. Most days, they are open at 9 a.m. for breakfast and close at 9 p.m. ZZA Factory on State Street gets its name from the shortening of the word pizza, but there are also wings and burgers on the menu. They specialize in Detroit-style pizza, a deep-dish pie cut into rectangular-style slices. More dining options are across the river in downtown Elgin, including the Elgin Public House. Grocery options like Jewel-Osco and Elgin Fresh Market are within 2 miles. The Fox Valley Flea Market is open Friday through Sunday year-round, with an outdoor store from June through September and an indoor shopping opportunity during the colder months.

Railroad tracks near State Street
Some industrial buildings in the neighborhood's eastern section are close to the railroad tracks. These include an industrial gas supplier, an electrical manufacturing facility and a machining manufacturer to the north.

Two close Metra stations
They’re on the same line - just one is a step closer to Union Station in downtown Chicago. The National Street Metra stop is 2 miles from the neighborhood, while the downtown Elgin station is only a mile to the southeast. Both can have commuters downtown in about an hour. Commuters without a car catch the Pace buses rumbling down McClure, Lawrence and Highland Avenues. It’s 2 miles north to connect with Interstate 90 and Chicago O’Hare International Airport, about 30 miles away. It’s an extra 10 miles to get to downtown Chicago. Ascension Saint Joseph-Elgin Hospital is a 2-mile drive for medical appointments or emergencies.
