A riverfront community surrounded by new growth
Peering down the residential streets from Northside, it’s possible to catch sight of the serene Pasquotank River. That’s because this northern Elizabeth City enclave is tucked right against the river’s shores. Although most houses here don’t sit directly on the water, residents from across the neighborhood are still within walking distance of Elizabeth City’s rapidly evolving Downtown. “The last five years have probably brought us more change than we've had in the prior decade,” Rhonda Twiddy says , a lifelong Elizabeth City resident and team lead of the Rhonda Twiddy Team. “It’s not someone coming in and building things up and moving on; it’s the people who live and work here who have put their money into Downtown. There are rooftop bars and places to play bocce ball, and it really doesn't feel the same as it did.” That change continues all around Northside, including north, where a new Sentara Healthcare hospital is under construction.
Historic farmhouses and attractive prices for waterfront homes
Despite this neighborhood’s urban makeup, with gridded streets and sidewalks leading directly into the heart of Downtown, home styles hearken to this area’s rural roots . Victorian farmhouses and ranch-style homes from the first half of the 20th century are common, often with ornate touches like gable brackets and wraparound front porches. Many houses sit on small lots that lack an attached garage but have just enough room for some old-growth trees. Alex Thorne, Realtor with the Rhonda Twiddy Team, says Northside's waterfront homes are sought-after because they tend to be more affordable than other nearby coastal communities. "Many people who come from the New York and New Jersey areas have been priced out of the Outer Banks. We have many unique waterfront properties where the land is not just wide open; there are still trees around you while looking out over your dock or fishing pier." Most homes list from $130,000 to $250,000, though some recently renovated properties can fall in the $300,000 to $420,000 range.
Competitive gaming and a private university
Most kids in Northside attend Elizabeth City-Pasquotank Public Schools. Sheep-Harney Elementary and Elizabeth City Middle both earn a C from Niche, while Pasquotank High receives a C-minus. The high school has a range of extracurriculars, including an esports team. The team began competing in the North Carolina Varsity Esports and STEM League in the 2023-2024 school year and encourages students to pursue careers in tech through competitive gaming. Mid-Atlantic Chrisitan University, a private institution with less than 200 undergraduate students, is located in Northside. Its campus occupies much of the neighborhood’s waterfront on the Pasquotank River.

Knobbs Creek Park is just across Ward Street, directly north of the neighborhood. The playground is popular with families, while the Par 3 golf course is a convenient spot to get in a quick game on the nine-hole greens. Indoor events are hosted at Knobbs Creek Recreation Center, while the Elizabeth City State University baseball team plays at the park’s Holmes Baseball Field. On game nights, residents are a short walk from watching the Vikings go for a home run at the diamond. “There’s also a great area just outside of town by 2 miles or so that has our softball park, and they play fall and spring softball,” Twiddy says, referring to Elizabeth City’s South Park Sports Complex. In addition to five lighted baseball and softball fields, the park is equipped with a driving range and batting cages.
Downtown happenings and a new hospital
While the neighborhood is almost entirely residential, even the northernmost houses are within a mile’s walk or bike ride of Downtown Elizabeth City. The city’s recently revitalized riverfront district is home to a vibrant array of restaurants, ranging from comforting seafood specialties at Cypress Creek Grill to maki rolls and hibachi at Toyama Japanese Restaurant. Downtown serves as an entertainment hub, hosting historical and ghost walking tours, bar and brewery hopping, flea and farmers markets, the summer concert series Music on the Green at Mariners' Wharf Park and the First Friday ArtWalk. While there are plenty of boutiques and locally owned shops to explore Downtown, most residents head elsewhere for their grocery runs. The University Plaza Shopping Center is north of the neighborhood along U.S. Route 17 and is home to the closest Food Lion and Sentara Albemarle Medical Center. A brand-new hospital will replace the facility, with an opening date slated for 2024, with new businesses expected to arrive along with it. “Just north of town over where the new hospital is going in, that's where our big box stores are coming up,” Thorne says, noting that the area is undergoing rapid development.
Fifty miles to the city or the beach
U.S. Highway 17 runs north to Norfolk, Virginia, the nearest major city with an international airport, roughly 50 miles away. “People are coming down here and realizing that they might have an easier and shorter commute from one state to another than across some of the bigger cities in Hampton Roads,” Thorne says, adding that traffic is rarely an issue around Elizabeth City. To the west, U.S. Highway 158 serves as residents’ ticket to the Outer Banks, approximately 50 miles away.
Tidal flooding is a potential risk
Given Northside’s location right on the Pasquotank River, some homes may be susceptible to flooding. “Some low-lying areas near Downtown do have tidal flooding,” Thorne says. “We are slightly more protected because the river flows into the Albemarle Sound; it's not an open ocean.”
