Suburbs along the Pasquotank River
Following the Pasquotank River south of Downtown Elizabeth City, waterfront homes fan out along the shoreline. This is Riverside, a residential nook with a suburban, slow-paced feel and the highest concentration riverfront homes Elizabeth City. Rhonda Twiddy, a Realtor and team lead of the Rhonda Twiddy team who lives in the neighborhood, says young families love Riverside for its proximity to shops and restaurants. “It’s just a quick walk to Downtown. I mean, you can be there in five minutes from some homes,” she says. Even housed on the farthest end of the neighborhood are at most 3 miles away from Elizabeth City’s revitalized riverfront district. Notably, the area also encompasses Elizabeth City State University’s campus, which lends this established community a youthful flair.
Riverfront or inland houses
Sought-after waterfront homes line Riverside Avenue and Rivershore Road. These houses range from black-shuttered Georgian Revivals to rambling ranch-style homes to petite cottages tucked behind the trees, but all of them feature docks for easy river access. Though they’re rare to list, homebuyers can occasionally snag one of these waterside homes for $500,000 to $1 million. Farther inland, homes on wooded lots ranging from tiny to nearly an acre encompass a wide range of styles. While some Millenium Mansions and new constructions with farmhouse flairs have cropped up near the Coast Guard Base, other houses date back to the 1950s and ‘60s. “The homes were smaller and more compact, back then. There are a lot of bungalows and Craftsman houses in Riverside,” Twiddy says. Homes not directly on the water are typically priced from $150,000 to $600,000.
Aviation sciences highlighted at a charter school and ECSU
Homes in Riverside are zoned to Elizabeth City-Pasquotank Public Schools. J.C. Sawyer Elementary is a short walk from many of the neighborhood’s homes and scores a C-minus from Niche. River Road Middle earns a C and Northeastern High receives a B-minus. The high school supports an active Future Farmers of America chapter that competes in the North Carolina NCF-Envirothon, where students are tested on their knowledge of local ecology and natural resources. Aspiring pilots might apply to attend Northeast Academy for Aerospace and Advanced Technologies (NEAAAT), a public charter school that uses project-based STEM learning and offers courses from Elizabeth City State University. The university’s academic campus is considered part of the neighborhood, occupying roughly 200 acres south of Parkview Drive and housing about 1,000 on-campus students during the school year. This historically Black university is part of the University of North Carolina system and is known for its aviation science program.
Parks on the river for fishing and boating
Though the neighborhood is bordered to the north by the Pasquotank River, much of the waterfront access is limited to the lucky residents with homes on the river. However, those with a boat can launch out from Charles Creek Park. Located on the eastern end of the neighborhood where Charles Creek flows into the Pasquotank River, the park is a popular spot for activities on or off the water, thanks to its scenic boardwalk and fenced-in playground. Directly north on the banks of the Pasquotank, the Elizabeth City Rowing Club hosts its regattas and youth training sessions at Coast Guard Park. For other team sports, South Park Sports Complex is a hub for all things baseball and softball, while the River Road Sports Complex is home to the parks and recreation department’s youth and adult soccer leagues.
Grocery shopping and everyday dining on Weeksville Road
Elizabeth City’s vibrant Downtown is just a couple miles north, or a short walk from the neighborhood’s westernmost homes. There’s no question that some of the city’s best shops and restaurants are located there, but a handful of hidden gems and convenient stop-ins are scattered along Weeksville Road, closer to some Riverside residents. Big Daddy’s Pizza is a beloved local haunt known for its casual atmosphere serving up pizza and wings with a side of regular drink specials. Southern Maid Donuts is an old-school bakery with a pastry counter full of yeast and cake donuts that can be ordered freshly dipped or stuffed with a range of toppings and fillings. Food Lion makes for easy grocery runs, or folks can find pick-your-own produce at Brothers Farm Market, a roadside market that operates on an honor system to sell a seasonal selection of fruits and veggies.
Less than 3 miles from Downtown
This car-dependent community is tucked away from major thoroughfares, but even the farthest homes are less than 3 miles from Downtown Elizabeth City. From there, U.S. Highway 17 and U.S. Highway 158 are easy to access, putting residents within 50 miles of both Norfolk and the Outer Banks. Southeast of the neighborhood lies the U.S. Coast Guard Base Elizabeth City and the Elizabeth City Regional Airport. However, noise from air traffic isn’t typically an issue in this residential area.
Waterfront homes come with extra concerns
Some homes on the Pasquotank River may be at risk of flooding, and high winds off the water can also be a concern. “I was here during Hurricane Isabel, which was the worst storm that we’ve recorded, and it turned out to be a wind event,” Twiddy says. According to Twiddy, tidal flooding from the river is rare thanks to the calmer waters of the Albemarle Sound compared to oceanfront properties.
