Walking distance to Walker Park
Evergreen has recreational space for every level of activity, from casual strolls to high-intensity workouts. Sitting just north of Pinewood Elementary, Pinewood Park has four tennis courts, a baseball field and a playground. Nearby Eastlake Athletic Club has fitness equipment and indoor basketball and tennis courts.
Many of the neighborhood's homes are within walking distance of Walker Park and the Osolo Branch of Elkhart Public Library. "[They] will be even more accessible as the city is updating the road and sidewalk along Bristol Street,” says Donna Mitschelen, Osolo Branch manager. The park features open green space and a paved pathway almost always populated with walkers and joggers. In fall 2024, Elkhart Parks and Recreation is expected to unveil an updated playground with wheelchair access and inclusive elements for children on the autism spectrum.
Though the neighborhood is less than a mile north of the St. Joseph River, the nearest access points are in downtown Elkhart.
Pinewood Park has added pickleball to the sports you can participate in.

The Osolo Branch of Elkhart Public Library keeps a full schedule of fun and educational events. The library strives to service all members of its community, regardless of age. Programs range from a monthly Lego-building club to presentations on how to prepare a will. “We are very welcoming to all who throw a shadow at our doorway,” Mitschelen says. “We serve a diverse community in age and economics.” Children’s story times are well attended, as are pop-up historical presentations, music performances and adult “crafternoons.”
Well-maintained homes in Evergreen cul-de-sacs
The neighborhood features quiet cul-de-sacs of homes built in the 1970s into the early ‘90s. Evergreen is indeed populated with trees, though the landscape still feels open and sprawling — many homes are set far back from the street, with large, neatly-mowed front lawns. Backyards are often fenced in with an in-ground pool. Here, New Traditional and ranch-style homes are common, typically priced between $180,000 and $260,000. A few exceptions climb up to $400,000.
According to Risk Factor, some homes along Woodland Drive may be at a higher risk of flooding.
