A residential neighborhood near Elkhart High's freshman campus

For five decades, the Goshen Avenue neighborhood was perhaps best known as the home to one of Elkhart’s two high schools. That changed in 2021 when the neighborhood’s Elkhart Central High School merged with Elkhart Memorial High. Now, all Elkhart Community Schools students begin their high school careers here at what is known as the Elkhart Freshman Division. But for residents, Goshen Avenue isn’t just a neighborhood where they spend a year – it's home.

A collection of early 20th century housing styles

Many Goshen Avenue homes were built for working- and middle-class residents in the first half of the 20th century. It was an era of variety in housing styles, and that trend can be seen throughout the neighborhood. “It’s a neighborhood where diverse architecture – featuring delightful cottages, cozy bungalows and spacious two-story homes – creates a warm and inviting atmosphere,” says Lucinda Lowe, Realtor with Berkshire Hathaway Home Services. Even smaller homes in the neighborhood tend to be on larger than average lots, giving residents plenty of space to enjoy Northern Indiana’s pleasant summers. Some houses in the neighborhood need repair and sell for between $50,000 and $100,000 while turnkey houses range from $125,000 to $200,000.

Ample greenspace along banks of Elkhart River

The Elkhart River forms the neighborhood’s western boundary, and Elkhart minimizes the potential for flood damage by turning most of the land along the river into public greenspaces. Rice Park and American Park are home to many of Elkhart High’s athletic fields, linked by the River Greenway Trail. Residents can also head to Baker Park and Studebaker Park, just south of the neighborhood. Studebaker Park is one of the highlights of Elkhart’s park system thanks to its kayak and canoe launch, playing fields, playground and pickleball courts. A pair of walkable historic cemeteries, Grace Lawn and Rice, are two of the neighborhood’s largest green spaces.

Freshman Division remains a neighborhood anchor

The Elkhart Freshman Division remains a neighborhood anchor even though it has transitioned away from being a four-year campus. All Elkhart High home football, lacrosse, track and field, tennis, girls' soccer and softball events are held on the campus. Neighborhood students attend Riverview Elementary. With a B-minus rating on Niche, Riverview is the top-rated Elkhart Community Schools grade school. Pierre Moran Middle School has a C-rating, and Elkhart High earns a B-minus.

Easy access to Elkhart High football and downtown events

Football games at Elkhart High are a popular way to spend a fall Friday night. In 2024, the Lions swept through the Northern Indiana Conference with a perfect 7-0 record against their league opponents. In summer, Goshen Avenue residents can easily reach the city’s biggest annual downtown events – the Elkhart Jazz Festival, held each July, and the Elkhart Grand Prix go-kart race, held each August.

Freight trains and fire trucks can create sound factor

Like most Elkhart neighborhoods, Goshen Avenue is primarily car-dependent, though it’s also somewhat bike-friendly thanks to the River Greenway Trail, which leads to downtown. A freight line that cuts through the neighborhood is a sound factor, and longer freight trains can tie up traffic on Goshen Avenue, leading some residents to take Middlebury Street as their detour to downtown. A fire station on the neighborhood's eastern edge can also be a noise factor when engines are called into service.

A short drive to many shopping and dining options

Neighborhood namesake Goshen Avenue leads northward to downtown Elkhart, which is just over a mile away. “This community is conveniently located just minutes from downtown,” Lowe says. Martin’s Super Market is the closest chain grocery store, and many of Elkhart’s most popular restaurants are nearby, including Hacienda Mexican Restaurant and Volcano Pizza. Closer to the neighborhood, Antonio’s Italian Restaurant features a full Italian menu but is best known for its pizza, which earned first place at the 2019 International Pizza Competition in Las Vegas. Nearby Supermarket Los Chamos and Family Dollar are also available for grocery and convenience needs.

Highly convenient for NIBCO employees

Manufacturing still plays a major role in Elkhart, and that’s true in this neighborhood as well. NIBCO, a water valve manufacturer, is headquartered just outside Goshen Avenue and employs more than 500 workers locally. For public transportation, the Interurban Trolley Orange Line stops near the NIBCO plant on Simpson Avenue. For long-distance transportation, the most convenient commercial airport is South Bend International Airport, 30 miles away. Elkhart General Hospital provides 24-hour emergency care just over 2 miles from the neighborhood.
