Teddy Roosevelt spoke loudly, and Elkhart listened
Historic Roosevelt is a neighborhood that pays homage to one of the watershed moments in Elkhart history. In 1912, former president Theodore Roosevelt made a stop at Elkhart’s train depot to deliver a speech. For perhaps the first time, Elkhart's name was in newspaper headlines throughout the country. Roosevelt’s upstart Bull Moose Party didn’t win the election, but his stop certainly made an impression – Elkhart County was one of six Indiana counties where he won the vote. Elkhart honored Roosevelt’s visit by naming its then-newest neighborhood in his honor. Today, many homes in that neighborhood feel as historic as its namesake.
Pierre Moran Park is the heart of the neighborhood
Less than a mile north of the neighborhood, the National New York Central Railroad Museum provides further context into the history of the New York-to-Chicago rail line that was instrumental to Elkhart’s initial growth. But it is Pierre Moran Park that serves as the present-day heart of this historic neighborhood. “Pierre Moran Park is a local gem,” says Lucinda Lowe, Realtor with Berkshire Hathaway Home Services. “It features a large swimming pool that invites residents to take a refreshing dip on warm days, and a modern skateboard park.” Pierre Moran Park also has an indoor pavilion available for rental. In the north end of the neighborhood, Roosevelt Park features a picnic area, basketball court and large playground.

Grocery stores and restaurants reflect neighborhood population
Grocery stores in and near the neighborhood reflect the tastes of a diverse population. There are three supermercados bordering Historic Roosevelt: Compra Mas, Cueramaro and El Paraiso. A Kroger three blocks south of the neighborhood in the Woodland Crossing shopping center is the nearest chain supermarket. Bill’s Bar-B-Que, popular for its ribs, brisket and catfish, is in the same shopping center. La Michoacana ice cream shop, located near Pierre Moran Middle School, is another popular neighborhood establishment.

Century-old houses rich in character
“The homes here vary from quaint one-story cottages to two-story residences, each with its own character,” Lowe says. A vast collection of architectural styles is on display in Historic Roosevelt, from bungalows and ranch-style houses to Craftsman, Arts and Crafts, Prairie-style and more. Lots are large enough that many residents tend a garden in their yards. As is often the case in a historic neighborhood, some houses need repairs. There are also some newer homes built on these century-old lots. Fixer-uppers range from around $45,000 to $100,000. Turnkey houses in the neighborhood range from just over $100,000 to about $200,000.
Homes built in the early 20th century are abundant in Historic Roosevelt.

Elementary and middle schools walkable for residents
Historic Roosevelt is tied to Elkhart’s past, but many neighborhood residents have an eye on their children’s futures. Roosevelt Elementary and Pierre Moran Middle School are in the southwest corner of the neighborhood, next to Pierre Moran Park. Roosevelt Elementary has a C-minus rating on Niche. Pierre Moran, one of Elkhart’s three public middle schools, earns a C. Students move on to Elkhart Freshman Academy and B-minus-rated Elkhart High School. Elkhart High opened in 2021 after the merger of Elkhart Central and Elkhart Memorial High Schools.
Elkhart's Roosevelt Elementary School services about 460 students in grades K-6.
A pickup drive can be found on the western edge of Pierre Moran Middle School's parking lot.

Two Interurban Trolley Lines available
Historic Roosevelt is an ideal neighborhood for getting around on foot. “Tree-lined streets and sidewalks offer a sense of community, livability and walkability,” Lowe says. Transportation is generally needed for getting around Elkhart at large, and public transit is available. The Interurban Trolley Red Line, which runs between Elkhart and Goshen, stops in the neighborhood along Benham and Lusher Avenues. The Interurban Trolley Orange Line, which has stops throughout Elkhart's south side, runs along Indiana Avenue.
Ideally situated for events in downtown Elkhart
Historic Roosevelt is little over a mile from downtown Elkhart, making it ideally situated for attending the city’s biggest events and festivals. “This neighborhood strikes the perfect balance between serene residential charm and the dynamic energy of urban living,” Lowe says. The Elkhart Jazz Festival, Elkhart Grand Prix go-kart race and City of Elkhart Labor Day parade are among downtown’s biggest annual events.
