Hudson-Sterling
Smaller houses close to B&O Railroad Tracks
The neighborhood was originally built with the intent of housing industrial workers who were employed at the various plants that lined either side of Sterling Avenue to take advantage of proximity to the nearby B&O Railroad tracks. Though about 600 square feet below the national average, these early 20th century houses are rich in architectural variety. “The housing options in this neighborhood are diverse, featuring charming bungalows, ranch-style homes, and two-story residences,” says Lucinda Lowe, Realtor with Berkshire Hathaway Home Services. Befitting the neighborhood’s changing nature, there are also several houses built since 2000. Recent sales range between $110,000 and $200,000.Sterling Park transforms face of Hudson-Sterling
Parks have become a large piece of Hudson-Sterling's identity. Sterling Park turned crumbling factories into tree-lined trails with a picnic area and community garden. Gans Park is a quintessential Indiana scene — a basketball court in the middle of a forest clearing. Just north of the neighborhood, Studebaker Park has soccer fields, tennis courts and a boat launch. Elkhart Environmental Center is one of the city’s great success stories: a 66-acre wildlife refuge where people once dumped their refuse. “Tens of thousands of kids have come through the environmental center to learn what happens when you’re not responsible with your waste,” Czarnecki says.Less than a mile from downtown dining and Antonio's Italian world championship pizza
Hudson-Sterling is a mix of homes, parks and industry, but entertainment is not far away. Downtown Elkhart is just a mile to the northwest and features a multitude of dining options that range from high-end selections at Artisan and 523 Tap & Grill to the down-home vibes of Five Star Dive Bar and Hot Dog Eddy’s. Antonio’s Italian, winner of the 2019 World Pizza Championship in Las Vegas, serves its award-winning pies a short trip across the Elkhart River from Hudson-Sterling. Compra Mas Supermarket is the closest grocery store. Martin’s Super Market, about 2 miles north of the neighborhood, is the nearest chain supermarket.Mary Beck Elementary offers IUSB collaboration
Mary Beck Elementary is just north of the neighborhood, adjacent to Studebaker Park. Mary Beck partners with Indiana University-South Bend education majors to offer co-teaching in many of its classrooms. Mary Beck has a C-minus rating on Niche. Pierre Moran, one of Elkhart’s three public middle schools, earns a C. Students move on to Elkhart Freshman Academy and B-minus-rated Elkhart High School.Elhart Environmental Center features regular events
Elkhart Environmental Center (EEC) features regular monthly programming as well as major annual events. Naturally, Earth Day is a major event at the center. The EEC also plays a key role in organizing EnviroFest, which is held at downtown’s Island Park on the second Saturday of every August. Summer events include nature play days for kids and a DIY beeswax workshop. The Elkhart River cleanup, Waggin’ in the Woods dog parade and Haunted Walk Through the Woods are popular fall features.River Greenway Trail connections a bike-friendly feature
The River Greenway Trail is a mostly paved path that runs 2 miles from the EEC towards downtown Elkhart. Deer, otters, beavers, muskrats, foxes and dozens of bird species are among the wildlife that trail users are likely to encounter. Sterling Avenue has a dedicated bike lane which connects to the Maple Heart Trail, which leads 5 miles southeast to Goshen. Public transit is available just a block north of the neighborhood on the Interurban Trolley Orange Line.
