Reclaimed park space enhances industry-heavy landscape
Hudson-Sterling is a neighborhood in southeast Elkhart where the quality of life is on the rise. Decades ago, Hudson-Sterling was bordered by an industrial sector running the length of Sterling Avenue to the west and a dump to the southeast. Although the neighborhood still has an industrial presence, Sterling Park and the Elkhart Environmental Center are reclaimed brownfields that have changed the neighborhood’s vibe. “I think it showcases the success we’ve had, and our focus on remediating some of the industrialism that the city has been built upon,” says Elkhart Parks and Recreation superintendent Jamison Czarnecki.
Smaller houses close to B&O Railroad Tracks
The neighborhood was originally built with the intent of housing industrial workers who were employed at the various plants that lined either side of Sterling Avenue to take advantage of proximity to the nearby B&O Railroad tracks. Though about 600 square feet below the national average, these early 20th century houses are rich in architectural variety. “The housing options in this neighborhood are diverse, featuring charming bungalows, ranch-style homes, and two-story residences,” says Lucinda Lowe, Realtor with Berkshire Hathaway Home Services. Befitting the neighborhood’s changing nature, there are also several houses built since 2000. Recent sales range between $110,000 and $200,000.

Sterling Park transforms face of Hudson-Sterling
Parks have become a large piece of Hudson-Sterling's identity. Sterling Park turned crumbling factories into tree-lined trails with a picnic area and community garden. Gans Park is a quintessential Indiana scene — a basketball court in the middle of a forest clearing. Just north of the neighborhood, Studebaker Park has soccer fields, tennis courts and a boat launch. Elkhart Environmental Center is one of the city’s great success stories: a 66-acre wildlife refuge where people once dumped their refuse. “Tens of thousands of kids have come through the environmental center to learn what happens when you’re not responsible with your waste,” Czarnecki says.
