Located on the south side of Elkhart, Impact has an active community that lives up to its name. With an abundance of houses of worship, a community center and a library, residents here are highly engaged in their surroundings, all within a residential setting. The neighborhood is only a mile-and-a-half from downtown Elkhart, and resources including schools and parks are within walking distance. “It’s a mix of people who have lived here a long time and new families moving into the area,” says Jarret Mitchell, manager of the Pierre Moran Branch of Elkhart Public Library. He says this is a place where people seize opportunities and advocate for their needs.
Impact neighbors engage through houses of worship
Impact has a high density of houses of worship representing a wide array of denominations. Pilgrim Rest Missionary Baptist Church hosts an annual Youth Explosion event with outdoor games and music. Fellowship of Hope Mennonite church has operated within the neighborhood since 1970 and hosts a monthly men’s breakfast encouraging interracial conversations on local issues.

Bilingual programming at Pierre Moran Branch Library
Surrounding neighborhood homes, Ullery Park has a vast open green space and a playground renovated in 2021. Locals can also head to Pierre Moran Park, which has a skate park and a summertime swimming pool with a water slide and a lap pool.
The Pierre Moran Branch of Elkhart Public Library hosts bilingual story times, craft events for all ages and a community altar during Dia de los Muertos. “We have a large bilingual staff here, so we run as much as we can in Spanish and English, which is important to this community,” Mitchell says. “The patrons really love their library. The community in the area really shows up and uses these services.”

Tolson Center hosts community programs and events
Family programming is also available at the Tolson Center for Community Excellence, a multipurpose community center with a gymnasium, athletic clubs and music classes. Kids can also receive free academic support year-round. The center hosts several community events each year, ranging from health fairs to a community baby shower. The organization’s Taste of Africa Festival includes live music, a fashion show and culinary offerings from chefs representing varied regions in Africa.

A quick trip to Woodland Crossing shopping center
People here generally have to leave the neighborhood to grab a bite, except when picking up a pie from Saylor’s Pizza & More. Woodland Crossing shopping center is just a half-mile south, home to casual restaurants and big-box stores such as Kroger and Big Lots. In 2025, the former Sears location is set to open as a Goodwill training facility, providing social services, education and job placement assistance to area residents. Woodland Crossing also hosts the family-owned Bill’s Bar-B-Que, serving beef brisket, ribs and classic sides such as macaroni and cheese. For snack runs, Neighborhood Convenience is within walking distance of many homes. Cueramaro Supermarket is also nearby, selling Central and South American ingredients as well as counter-service tacos.

Impact has an older housing stock than some of its neighbors, with many homes from the 1910s, ‘20s and ‘30s. Buyers will find Foursquares, bungalows, National-style homes and homes with Colonial and Dutch Colonial elements. Narrow sidewalks connect the neighborhood’s homes, which are neatly arranged on a grid-like pattern. Walking distance to Elkhart schools
Students here are within what Elkhart Community Schools calls the Walkzone of Roosevelt Elementary School, also known as the Roosevelt STEAM Academy. The school’s curriculum prioritizes hands-on projects in science, technology, engineering and math, and students begin playing an instrument in the third grade. Niche gives the school a C-minus. Seventh graders continue on to C-rated Pierre Moran Middle, also within walking distance.
Elkhart High divides students between a ninth-grade campus and a 10-12th grade campus. Students at Elkhart Freshman Division take general education courses, while older teens pursue a specialized field of study in addition to standard courses. Schools of Study within the B-rated school include health and public safety, engineering and the arts.

Downtown Elkhart accessible via bus or car
The Interurban Trolley bus service stops along 6th Street, Belham Avenue and Oakland Avenue. These buses provide transit between Elkhart and Goshen, though they can be used to get around within Elkhart as well. Downtown is a mile and-a-half away, while South Bend is a 20-mile drive on Highway 20.
