A mix of quiet and convenience southeast of downtown
Flanked by Pleasant Plain Avenue and Prairie Street on Elkhart’s southeast side, Pleasant-Prairie is a neighborhood where a diverse population enjoys quiet, tree-lined streets just 2 miles from the buzz of downtown. “It’s a charming and vibrant neighborhood that combines the best of both worlds – convenience and tranquility,” says Lucinda Lowe, Realtor with Berkshire Hathaway Home Services. “It offers a peaceful retreat while still being close to the city’s dining, shopping and entertainment options.”
A wide range of home sizes and styles
Pleasant-Prairie has enough housing variety to suit a wide range of budgets and tastes. Bungalow, ranch-style, bilevel and traditional two-story houses are mixed throughout the neighborhood. Though some of these styles are more prevalent on a given street, for the most part each block has its own unique feel. Sidewalks line most of the streets, making it easy to walk from block-to-block. The neighborhood has a handful of fixer-uppers that sell for under $100,000, but most houses sell between $120,000 and $240,000.
Ranch homes are typical in the neighborhood of Pleasant-Prairie.
Home buyers will find Pleasant-Prairie filled with mostly ranches, cottages and split-levels.

Shopping and dining options reflect a diverse population
A pair of neighborhood grocery stores reflect Pleasant-Prairie's dynamic population --- El Paraiso Supermarket, in the northwest corner, and El Rosal Supermarket, in the southeast corner. Another supermercado, Cueramaro Supermarket, is just a couple blocks west of the neighborhood. A Kroger on Prairie Street gives the neighborhood yet another grocery option. Nearby restaurants include Bill’s Bar-B-Que, which is known for its ribs, brisket and catfish. Just south of the neighborhood, Ricky’s Taqueria is a small, frequently crowded roadside restaurant so renowned for its barbacoa that it can be purchased by the pound for home cooking.
Kroger is within walking distance for most Pleasant-Prairie residents.
Though small, Ricky's Taqueria is a thriving Elkhart eatery with a large lunch rush.

Monger Elementary serves as neighborhood school
Monger Elementary School, which receives a C-rating on Niche, is in many ways the hub of community activity for families in this primarily residential area. C-rated Pierre Moran Middle School is just across the street from the neighborhood’s northwest boundary. Lowe says the nearby location of both schools “makes the morning drop-off a breeze.” Students begin high school at Elkhart Freshman Academy before advancing to B-minus-rated Elkhart High School. Elkhart High is located on the city’s west side, about 5 miles from the neighborhood. The Excel Center, a tuition-free high school for adults seeking to earn their diploma equivalent, is in Pleasant-Prairie.
Monger Elementary School has a student-teacher ratio of 19 to 1.

Pierre Moran Park and library branch both important to community
Pierre Moran was a Potawatomi chief who sold the plot of land that became downtown Elkhart to settler Havilah Beardsley, and many landmarks on the city’s south side are named in Moran’s honor. Pierre Moran Park, which borders the middle school, has a public swimming pool and skate park. "It's just around the corner, and ideal for summer fun and recreation," Lowe says. A few blocks south, Elkhart Public Library’s Pierre Moran branch is another important community center. The branch has a bilingual staff, as well as a dedicated section of materials for Spanish readers of all ages. In addition to books, library card holders are also able to borrow passes to area attractions like Wellfield Botanical Gardens and South Bend’s Potawatomi Zoo.
In the summer months, Elkhart locals can enjoy the pool at Pierre Moran Park.
Wellfield Botanic Gardens is a beautiful destination a short drive away from Pleasant-Prairie.

Library events tie into community fabric
Events at the Pierre Moran library branch reflect the population of its nearby neighborhoods. They include a monthly lotería night – a Mexican version of bingo – and an annual celebration of Mexico’s El día de los niños (Children’s Day), which is held each April 30th. The branch also hosts a Trunk or Treat event in its parking lot before Halloween. Downtown Elkhart is a 2-mile trip up Main Street from Pleasant-Prairie, providing convenient access to major city events like the annual Elkhart Grand Prix go-kart race.
The Pierre Moran branch of Elkhart Library offers programming in English and Spanish.
