Rivercreek has waterfront living for some, community resources for all

Rivercreek has a range of housing options 3 miles east of downtown Elkhart, from modest ranch-style homes to riverfront mansions with boat docks. Community-wide amenities are up-to-date and open to all; Walker Park’s playground is expanding to accommodate children with disabilities, and the local library branch saw a recent expansion to meet demand for both adults’ and kids’ programming. Casual restaurants are quickly accessible, as are grocery stores and other necessities. Families enjoy a short, half-mile commute to the local elementary school, which sits just across the street from Walker Park.

Upgrades to Walker Park and Osolo Branch Library

The neighborhood’s Walker Park has a popular walking path, a playground and open green space for rest and play. “It is a definite bonus to the area,” says Donna Mitschelen, manager of the Osolo Branch of Elkhart Public Library. The city is upgrading the park, introducing a new playground with wheelchair access and inclusive elements for children on the autism spectrum. The park also hosts the Osolo Branch library, which doubled in size in 2022. “Osolo Branch is nestled into a neighborhood which is diverse in age and economics,” Mitschelen says. Kids attend monthly Lego-building events and weekly story times. According to Mitschelen, the library’s standing story time became so popular, staff added a second reading session on Tuesdays. The neighborhood’s adults can enjoy history presentations, crafting nights and educational sessions on topics such as creating a will. “We are very welcoming to all who throw a shadow at our doorway,” Mitschelen says.

Home prices rise near St. Joseph River

North of Greenleaf Boulevard, the neighborhood has midcentury homes on neatly mowed lawns dotted with tall, mature trees. Ranch-style builds and split-levels are common, often with brick or stone elements and deep driveways for cars and boats. There are no sidewalks, as each resident’s grassy plot extends to the street. These homes generally range between $110,000 and $350,000. Homes along the St. Joseph River, south of Greenleaf Boulevard, tend to be larger and more architecturally varied. Here, buyers will find stately Colonial Revivals, Tudor Revivals, Modern-era homes and New Traditionals with steep mansard roofs. These homes typically come with a boat dock on the river, a horseshoe driveway and elaborate landscaping to set homes back from the street. Buyers will find listings for riverfront properties between $400,000 and $625,000, though some estimated home values exceed $1 million. Brentwood at Elkhart Assisted Living is also within the neighborhood, a fully resourced residential community on Bristol Street.

Pinewood Elementary a half-mile away

Kids here attend Pinewood Elementary a half mile away, then North Side Middle, which both have a C from Niche. Ninth graders head to Elkhart Freshman Division, where they take general education courses before choosing a specialized learning community at the main campus of Elkhart High. Sophomores, juniors and seniors take courses in pathways such as engineering, health and public safety and the arts. The school gets a B from Niche.

Casual dining at Bristol Street and Osolo Road

There are a handful of banks and small businesses at the corner of Bristol Street and Osolo Road. George’s Gyros is a family-owned favorite serving Mediterranean sandwiches. Volcano Pizza is another casual stop well known for their meatball subs and breadsticks. Aracely’s Palateria y Antojitos has Mexican desserts and some hot items such as tortas and quesadillas. For groceries, people can head less than a mile east from the neighborhood to Cobblestone Crossing shopping center, which has a Martin’s Supermarket with a pet store and fuel center.

Downtown Elkhart 3 miles away

The 3-mile journey to downtown Elkhart starts on Bristol Street. The Indiana Toll Road runs about 2 miles north of the neighborhood, and connects residents to South Bend about 20 miles away, or Chicago 110 miles away. Travelers can fly out of South Bend International Airport, which is a 30-mile drive from Rivercreek. Elkhart General Hospital is 4.5 miles away.

Celebrating industry and the arts at the Elkhart Jazz Festival

People here can quickly journey to events in downtown Elkhart. Elkhart Jazz Festival is especially popular — a nod to the city’s status as the “Band Instrument Capital of the World," earned from its instrument manufacturing industry. Each June, the festival includes four days of live jazz performances across five stages — a tradition since 1988.

Potential flood risks along St. Joseph River

According to Risk Factor, the neighborhood’s proximity to the St. Joseph River increases its risk for flooding. Though the risk is more pronounced along the river’s edge, homes throughout the neighborhood may be susceptible to flooding.
