Riverview East
Neighborhood in Elkhart, Indiana
Elkhart County 46516

House prices vary depending on river proximity
Almost every riverside property in Riverview East takes advantage of the situation with a dock connecting the backyard to the water. “The river is highly navigable in that area,” Krol says. “Boating, water skiing, kayaking, tubing, fishing — it’s all fantastic.” Ranches, two-story Traditional homes, custom contemporaries and estate homes around 3,000 square feet can all be found along with waterfront. Recent sales have ranged from $400,000 to $485,000, though some houses that have not hit the market in years are estimated at twice that value. South of Jackson Boulevard is a more typical residential mix of ranches, bungalows and Cape Cods averaging closer to 1,800 square feet. Prices here range between $130,000 and $260,000.
Park features softball, skateboarding
Riverview Park surrounds Riverview Elementary on three sides. A complex of four youth softball diamonds is the park’s shining feature. There is also a large field that can be used for soccer or pickup football games. Michelle Hartwig, the director of student ministry at the neighborhood's Trinity on Jackson Church, says the park’s Martin Skatepark is a popular hangout for area teens. Riverview Elementary’s playground and basketball courts are accessible to the public during hours school isn’t in session.
Riverview Elementary a neighborhood plus
Riverview East is among the handful of Elkhart neighborhoods with its own elementary school. Riverview Elementary serves kindergarten through sixth grade and receives a C-plus rating on Niche. Among Elkhart schools, Riverview has the highest percentage — 52.8% — of sixth-grade students demonstrating growth in math, which is well above the state average of 35.1%. Students attend C-rated Pierre Moran Middle School before moving on to the Elkhart Freshman Academy, which is 2 miles from the neighborhood. They complete their final three years at Elkhart High, which receives a B-minus.
Close to major events on land and water
Those who live on the river put it to good use. The Upper Saint Joe River Rats sponsor events throughout the summer, including a lighted boat parade between the Johnson Street and County Road 17 bridges, and a poker run event where boats stop at participating area homes along the river. Riverside East is also convenient to Elkhart’s biggest downtown events, such as the Elkhart Jazz Festival and the Elkhart Grand Prix go-kart race. "As a transplant, I'm always impressed by what is offered in Elkhart," Hartwig says. "Downtown, it's not abnormal to have a detour because of a parade or an event."
Across the tracks from factories
Railroad tracks separate Riverview East from an industrial area with several RV factories and the Conn-Selmer brass instrument factory — key cogs in Elkhart’s economy for decades. Wood Street does not have dedicated bike lanes, but is wide enough to be bike-friendly and connects with the Riverview Greenway Trail 1 mile west of the neighborhood. The Interurban Trolley Orange Line is the nearest available public transportation with stops on Simpson Avenue, just west of the neighborhood.
Bulldog Crossing a familiar neighborhood hot spot
The intersection of Jackson Boulevard and Middleton Run Road, known as Bulldog Crossing, has been home to some form of neighborhood bar or tavern for more than 100 years. The latest, Rico’s at Bulldog Crossing, opened in 2019 and offers casual American far, including burgers, sandwiches and wings for lunch and dinner. There are multiple dining options in the shopping center 3 miles west of the neighborhood on Jackson Boulevard, which is also where Martin’s Super Market is located.
