Elkhorn’s expanding appeal drives growth

“When only new will do, buyers love Elkhorn,” says Ryan Renner, Realtor at Better Homes and Gardens Real Estate. As one of the fastest-growing areas in west Omaha – the population has nearly tripled in the past 20 years – its explosive development testifies to the demand for new housing and Elkhorn’s expanding appeal. While buyers will pay a bit more to live here, the benefits outweigh any drawbacks. Easy access to Downtown Omaha, award-winning schools, and an ever-expanding list of fun things to do and cool places to explore have put Elkhorn at the top of many Omaha homebuyers’ lists.

Parks educate locals about history

Douglas County has done a remarkable job updating existing parks and building new ones to keep up with the needs of new homeowners. Small, but well-equipped pocket parks like Fairmeadows give neighbors just what they want. Close to home but also hidden away, this 1.1-acre gem feels almost private. Elkhorn Shores is a 22-acre park along the Elkhorn River that offers water access and ideal amenities for campers. In addition to tent and RV sites, it offers an online calendar of seasonal events such as movie nights under the stars, Renaissance fairs, and Camp Fear, a Halloween favorite.

Local history buffs will appreciate Ta-Ha-Zouka Park. With an Omaha Indian name meaning “Horn of the Elk”, Ta-Ha-Zouka is one of the most amenity-rich parks in West Omaha. Its recent opening of a 4,772-square-foot skate park has thrilled neighborhood kids and made after-school fun a breeze. Visitors have much to choose from in the 28-acre park including walking trails, a toddler playground, a sand volleyball court, baseball and football fields, tennis and pickleball courts, and even a military tank on display. Their large grassy fields are spacious enough to host the annual Nebraska Balloon and Wine Festival.

Shopping and dining attractions are expanding in Elkhorn

While Elkhorn has a wide selection of national chain restaurants, its local places get a lot of attention, and for good reason. Boyd and Charlie’s, with its BBQ sandwiches, smoked meats and long-standing cozy corner location, is a favorite. Maximo’s Cantina in Old Towne Elkhorn has it all – an extensive Tex-Mex menu, breakfast (weekends only), lunch and dinner, and room both inside and out for large groups or events. Fala’s Treasures and Coffee House is indeed a coffee shop. It’s also a bistro. And it’s a boutique that sells clothing, accessories, and home goods.
