Small, historic community that persevered
The historic town of Scottsburg was a booming community in the late 1800s that now offers a slow-paced lifestyle next to the Umpqua River. The first Southern Oregon newspaper was printed here in 1854. and it inspired publications like the Oregon Sentinel, the official newsletter of the Oregon National Guard. Two major floods – the Great Flood of 1862 and the Christmas Flood of 1964 – destroyed parts of the area, and people who live there today know what they’ve been through. But they’re still grateful. “We’ve been through a lot, but we’re still standing. We’re very blessed,” says Sheryl Holberg, an 84-year-old historian who has lived in Scottsburg her entire life. “We still have homes from the 1800s and places like the local post office and Scottsburg Cemetery.” The community is close-knit, Holberg says, and has a namesake church where seven to ten people worship together every Sunday.
