Settled on the banks of the Elk River, Elkview is an aptly named community in Kanawha County, about 15 miles north of Charleston. It’s a rural place where you can find a home in the hills that is surrounded by woods, but one that still has all your daily essentials close by. Recreation is easy to find, with water sports among the most popular things to do in the area. Throw in a state-of-the-art school and highways that connect to nearby communities, and Elkview has plenty to offer in the West Virginia hills.
Elkview has a mix of housing styles, land sizes and price points
Ranch-style homes, cabins and bungalows are some of the most common housing options you’ll see in Elkview. Many of them sit on spacious tree-filled lots along small, gravel roads, while others feel more like part of a neighborhood, with houses close together. You can also find waterfront homes that have river views and easy access for fishing or boating. Heading towards the southern end of the community along New Hope Road, you’ll see larger properties with multiple acres, often with barns, sheds or workshops in addition to the homes. Throughout the area, prices generally range from the lower $100,000s to the upper $300,000s.

While the community has a rural feel, daily essentials are nearby. “People like that area as far as Elkview and Pinch go, because you’re not that far from everything you need,” says Lisa Eden, a Realtor at Old Colony Realtors with 30 years of experience. Elkview Market is a locally owned grocery store at the intersection of U.S. 119 and Pinch Road. The shopping center also has a Walgreens and a Family Dollar. Just 2 miles north on Frame Road is the Elkview Crossings mall, with a Kroger, Goodwill and the local branch of the Kanawha County Public Library. Popular chain restaurants fill the area, like Gino’s Pizza & Spaghetti House and Tudor’s Biscuit World. For a locally owned spot, you can try Elkview Chinese Restaurant or Tapatio Grill & Cantina.

River access and parks make outdoor time easy
Getting outside is easy in Elkview. “People utilize that river,” Eden says. “A lot of people like to kayak.” The closest access point for boating or floating down the river is just north of Elkview at the Blue Creek Bridge. There is also a boat ramp with a few parking spaces in Big Chimney. One of the most popular trips is floating down the river from Blue Creek to Coonskin Park in Charleston. If you’re not into water spots, Coonskin Park has plenty to do while staying dry, including a public golf course, hiking and biking trails, a fishing pond, and playgrounds. The Elk River Community Center offers indoor and outdoor activities, including a basketball court, playground, exercise room and pool tables.

Highways and bus routes connect to Charleston
Elkview offers easy commutes into Charleston, with two highways providing a straight shot to the city. You can drive about 16 miles down Interstate 79 or 13 miles on Highway 119, and either drive typically takes 20 to 25 minutes. Two bus routes also serve the area and connect to Clendenin and Downtown Charleston.
