Atlanta suburb in three counties
Ellenwood is a suburb of Atlanta that combines southern living with metropolitan lifestyles. The community resides in Clayton, Henry and DeKalb counties. "Because of the location, it is a great place for people who work in Atlanta and career-oriented people," says Eva Thomas, a real estate agent with PBG Built Realty. A growing area close to Atlanta, the population has expanded to around 41,000 people of all ages and takes pride in convenience, comfort and community. The area has a strong connection with its history, evident by the Old Stagecoach Road, one of the oldest roads in North Georgia. The road connects the Etowah mounds and Cherokee Country to Coweta Falls, with early Georgia maps calling it "Strawn's Road."
Step on the green at Panola Mountain Golf Course
Ellenwood offers many outdoor recreation opportunities for residents while still being close to the Atlanta metro area. One of the outdoor highlights is the Panola Mountain Golf Course, an 18-hole course with scenic views and green fees ranging between $30 and $40. Outdoor enthusiasts hit the South River Trail for several miles of wooded land and greenery. The South River Trail extends to the Michelle Obama Walking Trail, a hiking trail that is accessible from Georgia State University's Clarkston Campus and recently received funding to expand.
Catch a ride on MARTA
Ellenwood residents can access the MARTA train, the premiere public transportation option in the Atlanta metro area. The rail stations give locals convenient access to downtown Atlanta without dealing with the traffic. Those who decide to take their vehicles have access to expressways on Interstate 675 and State Route 138 to help them get in and out of town. Ellenwood could be more walkable, so most local errands require a car or public transportation. The Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport is about 15 miles from Ellenwood for when it's time to take a trip. "You can get downtown within 20 minutes and the airport within 10 minutes, depending on where you live," Thomas says.
Go shopping at Ellenwood Town Center
Those looking for a nice, sit-down restaurant may need to leave the Ellenwood area to find one. Ellenwood has a good mix of chain restaurants, like Waffle House and Mcdonald's, and local delicacies, such as Soul Temptation Restaurant and Kenny's Breakfast. Some of these chain restaurants and other shopping destinations are at the Ellenwood Town Center. The town center is a strip center easily accessible from Interstate 675 and adjacent to Walmart. It offers food, shopping, and a gym. Locals looking to go out can access downtown Atlanta to experience the city's nightlife.
Easy access to several sporting events
Residents in Ellenwood have several events, festivals and celebrations going on. However, many of them will take place in Atlanta proper. The area celebrates holidays with festivals and parades, like the ShamRock Festival for St. Patrick's Day. The proximity to Atlanta gives residents access to sporting events featuring Atlanta teams and is a sight for major championship games, including the SEC Championship Game in college football. Atlanta has hosted three Super Bowls in the past, and it plans to host more in the future.
Variety of homes and prices in Ellenwood
Houses in Ellenwood usually range between around $180,000 for some homes that are often ranch-style or bungalow-style homes with a few bedrooms and a couple of bathrooms and $600,000 for a house with several bedrooms and bathrooms, a few thousand square feet and a garage. Most of the homes will go for somewhere in the $300,000 range. Homes will sell on average after 44 days on the market, slightly higher than the national average of 41.
Strong support for school sports
Schools in Ellenwood receive a C-minus from Niche, with Cedar Grove High School receiving an A for sports and activities. The area is home to the Utopia Academy for the Arts, a charter middle school for students pursuing artistic careers. The academy offers several courses for students aspiring to be songwriters, actors, film directors and designers. Students looking to continue their education after high school are near several colleges and universities, including several Georgia State University campuses, DeVry University and Mercer University.
Ellenwood crime numbers
Ellenwood receives a B-minus overall from CrimeGrade, with an F for violent crime and an A for property crime. Nearby, downtown Atlanta receives a C-minus from CrimeGrade with a C for violent crime and a C-minus for property crime for comparison. The crime rate in Ellenwood is around 30 incidents per 1,000 residents. FBI crime data shows that violent crime numbers have been on a downward trajectory in the last couple of years.
