A village teeming with local pride
Nine miles west of downtown Milwaukee is Elm Grove, a village surrounded on three sides by the city of Brookfield. This predominantly residential community was incorporated in 1955 and has become one of the area’s most sought-after suburbs. Village Recreation Manager Logan Kein says the community’s central park, top-notch public schools and cloistered, small-town feel fuel an abundance of civic pride. “It’s a quiet community and very well-mannered,” he says. “People walk tall and communicate with each other very well. Everyone’s supportive of all the different projects the village has done, gives their opinions and works things out for the good of the village.”
Elm Grove Park & Shop features restaurants, shops and a grocery store at the village's heart.
From 1960s condos to European-style mansions
Elm Grove occupies a near-square section between North Avenue to the north and Bluemound Road to the south. From the air, the village is almost entirely green, with considerable forestry surrounding winding residential roads. Its housing stock is highly diverse, with properties averaging around $600,000 in value. Smaller homes include single-level condominiums in buildings from the 1960s to today. These start in the mid-$100,000s, which might afford a two-bedroom unit under 1,100 square feet. Single-family homes appear throughout the village, from bungalows and ramblers to Colonials and Cape Cods. A few custom, European-inspired mansions claim Elm Grove’s highest home prices. Homebuyers with a $3 million budget could buy a five-bedroom English-style manor over 13,000 square feet.

Zoned for Wisconsin's No. 1 high school
Elm Grove shares a public school system with Brookfield, named Elmbrook Schools as a portmanteau of the two. Niche calls Elmbrook Schools the best school district in Wisconsin, giving all its K-12 schools coveted A-plus grades. All but a small section of Elm Grove is zoned for Tonawanda Elementary School, which operates in the village’s northeast section. Pilgrim Park Middle School, in the western section, accommodates sixth through eighth grade. Finally, all Elm Grove high schoolers attend Brookfield East High School, which is about 1 mile north of the village. It's home to over 1,300 students and is considered the state’s best public high school by Niche.

"People go for peace and quiet"
Elm Grove Village Park anchors the community directly next to Village Hall. “A lot of people call it a diamond in the rough,” Kein says. “With all the noise of the Milwaukee suburbs, it’s the place people go for peace and quiet, besides the local train that passes through.” Visitors can traverse a network of trails, including a loop around the park’s scenic pond. Local athletes frequent the soccer, baseball, basketball and tennis facilities and swim laps in the pool during the summer. “The pool has a great summer staff that we usually rehire year after year. If not, they often come as recommendations from their brothers or sisters. The staff is very welcoming and very open,” Kein says.

Sip "the new coffee" at Zisters
Summer also beckons visitors to enjoy the park’s seasonal beer garden. “Our beer garden is presented by Third Space Brewing,” Kein says. “When it’s open, it’s packed. It’s right next to our volleyball court and playground, so parents and children will come and have a great time.” Locals can find other dining destinations in the Elm Grove Park & Shop commercial district to the south, including Zisters. This popular brunch restaurant serves chicken and waffles, chorizo bowls and champagne — or, as the staff calls it, “the new coffee.” Nearby, Fresh Baked is an easygoing café with flaky croissants that customers love. Sendik’s Food Market operates a few doors down, meeting locals’ day-to-day grocery needs.
