Englewood’s Downtown District blends commerce and community
Shops and restaurants are abundant in Englewood’s Downtown District, where there are multiple commercial corridors. As the city’s center, the area is also a hotspot for events and entertainment. “It’s a tight-knit community with a small-city atmosphere, yet it has all the benefits associated with the larger Denver metropolitan area,” says Chris Harguth, the City of Englewood’s Director of Communications.
Local shops and restaurants along commercial corridors
As Englewood’s main area for commerce, Downtown District is filled with shopping centers and standalone restaurants. CityCenter Englewood is a business park with multi-use, high-rise offices, plus Nixon’s Coffee House. Walmart Supercenter sits across Galapago Street. The area’s commercial corridor along Hampden Avenue is lined with eateries, from fast-food options like McDonald’s to chain restaurants like Chipotle. Steakhouse 10 is a fine-dining establishment, and The South Restaurant serves traditional Mexican cuisine.
Running east of the neighborhood, S. Broadway has its own commercial corridor adding to Englewood’s Downtown District. There are novelty stores, thrift shops, bookstores, clothing boutiques and more. Rico’s Pizzeria & Italian Kitchen is one of dozens of local restaurants in the area. ZOMO specializes in Asian American meals, and Breakfast Queen serves American and Mexican-inspired breakfast dishes. “People are encouraged to try some of the city’s favorite international restaurants, which bring diverse and authentic cuisine from across the globe,” Harguth says. Breweries and taphouses line the street too. King Soopers is the area’s grocery store.
Downtown’s attractions and community events
In addition to its commercial opportunities, Downtown District has a handful of attractions. The Rodz & Bodz Museum features over 300 famous movie cars, from hotrods to vintage models. Visitors can find Pixar’s Pizza Planet truck among its collection, along with Jeeps from various "Jurassic Park" movies. Another entertainment option is the Gothic Theatre, which hosts live music performances in an old art deco movie house.
CityCenter is also a popular gathering place for city events. On Thursday evenings in July, the CityCenter Amphitheater hosts the SunSET Concert Series, with live music. There’s also a Holiday Market in December at the Englewood Civic Center, where local vendors sell handcrafted goods and holiday-themed treats. The event ends with the annual Holiday Tree Lighting.
Limited housing market with plans for growth
Englewood’s Downtown District is primarily commercial, though there are a handful of housing options such as bungalows and various apartment complexes, in an area where almost 90% of residents rent. The neighborhood’s single-family homes do not often become available. One bungalow built in the 1920s sold in 2024 for around $350,000.
According to Harguth, the City Council and Englewood Downtown Development Authority are looking to add additional housing to CityCenter, though no completion date is currently set. “It will be a mix of multi-family and for-sale options such as condos or townhouses.”
The CAP Index Crime Score in Englewood’s Downtown District is 8 out of 10, higher when compared to the national average of 4.
Navigating Englewood’s multiple modes of transportation
Sidewalks and crosswalks lend to a walkable, cyclist-friendly neighborhood. When it comes to public transportation, Englewood Station is just beyond CityCenter. “The city is served by light rail and bus transit systems, linking the community to downtown Denver and other popular locations,” Harguth says. The Regional Transportation District has bus stops along Elati Street, S Broadway and Englewood Parkway. U.S. Route 285, known as W Hampden Avenue, is the area’s main thoroughfare and connects to CanAm Highway, which can be used to travel into downtown Denver, about 7 miles south. The Denver International Airport is roughly 30 miles away. Hampden Place Medical Center is a family health care practice in the neighborhood. About a mile east is HCA HealthONE Swedish, a general hospital.
Nearby city parks and recreation on South Platte River
Englewood Station Park is the area’s main green space. The circular field sits within CityCenter and has multiple sculptures and a water fountain that doubles as a splash pad. Park benches are scattered along the area’s paved walkways. Denny Miller Field on Ithaca Avenue is a multi-use field with baseball diamonds. Half a mile north of the neighborhood, Cushing Park has a playground, basketball court and skate park. Walking trails cut through the area and surround the park’s lake. The South Platte River flows on the other side of CanAm Highway, providing additional outdoor recreation. Multiple hiking and biking trails follow the stream, and fishing and kayaking are allowed.
Getting educated in Englewood public schools
Downtown District is served by Englewood Schools, which offers choice enrollment. Bishop Elementary School earns a C grade from Niche and provides a STEAM-based curriculum. The C-rated Englewood Middle School will merge with the A-minus-rated Englewood Leadership Academy after the 2024-2025 school year. Both are currently located on The Englewood Campus, adjacent to the high school. Englewood High School receives a B-minus and has award-winning programs for journalism and the Future Business Leaders of America.
