New Jersey suburb with an active downtown, diverse eateries and a nature center
Englewood is a diverse northern New Jersey suburb with an urban vibe. Its hilly downtown area is lined with international eateries, bakeries and boutiques, while nearby nature centers offer green space and views. Located in Bergen County, Englewood attracts New Yorkers looking for more space and value without giving up access to Manhattan, which is about a 20-minute drive if traffic is light. “A lot of people here have half their life in New York and half their life here,” says Marilyn Budnick, an agent with Sotheby’s International Realty and a 25-year Englewood resident. “The town is very diverse. Through the years, I’ve known a lot of artists and writers who’ve lived here.”

Several women’s clothing shops are downtown, including the Engle Shop, which has been in business for over 50 years. Low inventory remains in Englewood
Englewood has a variety of housing styles, including Victorian homes dating to the early 20th century, colonial-style residences reflecting Englewood’s 18th-century roots, and townhouses and family homes built in the early 1900s. They often have large front yards and are set along tree-lined streets with sidewalks. “Like the rest of New Jersey, prices have really increased because there’s no inventory,” Budnick says. Townhouses start at just over $500,000, but most single-family homes are priced between $1 million and $2 million. Englewood has its share of estates as well, with prices upwards of $5 million.
