A rural Cascades Foothills community in southern King County
Over 100 years ago, Veazie, a community in south King County, was a small town. The coming of the railroads, plus the timber industry, mining and homesteading, led to the development of the area in the late 19th century. The company Veazie & Russell Logging gave the former town its name. It's in the foothills of the Cascade Mountains and remains rural and quiet, with farms, forests and abandoned train tracks. To the south is Birch and the small city of Enumclaw, which is known as the Gateway to Mount Rainier. "Veazie is considered Enumclaw. It's very spaced out. People who move here want some acreage and to be a little further out," says Bart Chmielewski, a real estate agent with Windermere Real Estate/PSK Inc.
There's not much on the market, but styles, ages and home prices vary
Some of the oldest homes are from the early 20th century, though more date to the 1980s and 1990s. Styles run the gamut, from vintage farmhouses and ramblers to contemporary and custom homes. There's not much on the market at a given time, but data estimations show homes under 2,000 square feet range from the $400,000s to the $800,000s. Homes of about 2,500 to 5,300 square feet are $1 million to $1.7 million. Multiacre lots are the norm; they may include barns, greenhouses, gardens and other agricultural features.
The CAP Index Crime Score in Veazie is 1 out of 10, compared to the national average of 4.
It's a car-dependent area with state Route 169 to the west
Car-dependent Veazie is about 30 miles east of Tacoma and 40 miles southeast of Seattle. Southeast 392nd Street and Veazie Cumberland Road Southeast are the main roads that meet in Veazie; state Route 169 runs on the west side. The Farmers Park Park & Ride is in Enumclaw, as are stops for King County Metro DART service.
There are a lot of outdoor recreational spaces close to Veazie
North of Veazie, Nolte State Park has a lake often used for boating and fishing. Birdwatchers frequent the trail around the lake. Flaming Geyser State Park and Green River Gorge Conservation Area are nearby. Skiers head 42 miles southeast to the popular Crystal Mountain Resort. The resort's annual alpine-themed event, Nachtspektakel, includes skiing under the stars.
Downtown Enumclaw has locally owned shops and hosts events
Farms, ranches, equestrian services and a fruit tree nursery are some of the businesses in Veazie. "But at the end of the day, if you want groceries, you have to go to town," Chmielewski says. Enumclaw has a Grocery Outlet, Safeway and Tres Reinas Market. Enumclaw's historical downtown, about 5 miles from Veazie, has boutiques and locally owned restaurants, like The Mint Restaurant & Alehouse. Cole Street is blocked off from vehicle traffic for events like the Wine Walk in the fall, the Santa Parade and summertime artisan market Sundays on Cole. St. Elizabeth Hospital is the primary medical provider in the area. Auburn and Bonney Lake are 16 miles away in different directions and have more retail and dining.
Kids may go to public schools in the Enumclaw School District
In 1885, Veazie's first educational institution opened: a one-room schoolhouse with 14 students. Today, Veazie is part of the Enumclaw School District, with schools like Byron Kibler Elementary School, which has more than 400 students and a B-minus grade from Niche. Thunder Mountain Middle School and Enumclaw High School receive B grades.
Pro Rodeo, King County Fair and other events at the Expo Center
The Enumclaw Expo Center hosts events year-round. Some people visit for swap meets, dog shows and fundraisers. Many are in attendance for the Enumclaw Wine & Chocolate Festival in February, the Scottish Highland Games in July, the Enumclaw Pro Rodeo in August and the King County Fair, held in the summer.

The GreatSchools Rating helps parents compare schools within a state based on a variety of school quality indicators and provides a helpful picture of how effectively each school serves all of its students. Ratings are on a scale of 1 (below average) to 10 (above average) and can include test scores, college readiness, academic progress, advanced courses, equity, discipline and attendance data. We also advise parents to visit schools, consider other information on school performance and programs, and consider family needs as part of the school selection process.
