Where spectacular views and sunsets draw buyers
Over the past 100 years, the view from Erie’s Lakeside neighborhood brought hundreds of couples to the Sunset Inn for their wedding celebrations. “I attended a 25th wedding anniversary there,” says 40-year veteran Realtor Sue Weber with Agresti Real Estate. Born and raised in Erie, Weber recalls the inn’s spectacular lakefront views and the reasonably priced homes around it. “Lakeside is one of Erie’s best-kept secrets,” she says. With industrial centers and offices sharing the neighborhood, Lakeside also connects to Erie’s manufacturing industry. “The neighborhood is next to Wabtech, which bought out GE, a maker of locomotives, and is still Erie’s largest employer,” says Fred Amendola, Realtor and leader of the Fred Amendola Team with Keller Williams Realty Erie. Lawrence Park next door is a manufacturing township built for GE employees, and the Sunset Inn, now demolished and replaced with homes, was first opened as a retreat for GE executives in 1922. Lakeside is also minutes away from other Erie employers, such as Erie Insurance or the hospitals and universities throughout the city. “It’s a pocket area that makes sense for workers or anyone who loves boating and picturesque sunsets.”
Lakefront recreation with a coastal flair
Residents don’t have to live on Lakeside Drive to enjoy the Lake Erie coastline. Chautauqua Park and Cranch Park are small green spaces on the shore within blocks of neighborhood homes. Here, walkers or bikers have benches to sit on and grand lakefront views to enjoy. Farther inland, Franklin Park has a baseball diamond and an open area with mature shade trees. Residents can use the Lake Erie boat launch in nearby Lawrence Park, less than a mile away. The Lawrence Park Golf Club, too, is 2 miles from Lakeside and features a private 18-hole regulation course with breathtaking lakefront views.

Homes within blocks of Lake Erie
Lakeside has its fair share of Cape Cods, which list from $85,000 to $195,000, and ranch-style homes that range from $120,000 to $160,000. Most were built in the 1950s and include hardwood floors, covered decks and fenced backyards. “The closer to the lakefront you live, the higher the home price,” Amendola says. “I sold a $150,000 home that was not lakefront to a couple who love it because the lake is still very close.” Colonial revival homes built in the early 1900s with brick facades, enclosed front porches and detached garages sell for $55,000 to $160,000. “The difference is that these homes allow buyers to live next to the lake at an affordable price,” Weber says.

Summer concert series in Lawrence Park
While festivals like CelebrateErie draw thousands to the downtown in August, Lakeside residents might enjoy events on a smaller scale in Lawrence Park, such as the township’s summer concert series at the gazebo in Beute Park. These concerts feature local musicians and take place once a month in June, July and August. Audience members often bring blankets or lawn chair to enjoy the music with the community.
Where to eat and shop in Lakeside
Lakeside is less than a square mile in size, and only a few restaurants are within walking distance. They include MC’s Bar and Grill, a biker bar on East Lake Road that features pool tables, a full bar with beer by the bottle, popcorn and comfort foods. Ricardo’s, also on East Lake, is a family-owned Italian restaurant in the neighborhood for over 75 years. The eatery is well-known for its steaks, seafood, chicken and classic Italian dishes. Filet mignon is the specialty. Trawka’s Market is south of MC’s on Payne Street. This corner store is well stocked with grocery items and offers a meat and prepared salad counter. There’s also a Walmart Supercenter off the Bayfront Connector at East 26th Street for other essentials.

Erie schools that support its future workforce
Lakeside schools belong to the Erie City School District, which receives a C-plus from Niche. Neighborhood youngsters can attend Edison Elementary, a C-minus-rated school with a low 12-to-1 student-teacher ratio within walking distance of most homes. At East Middle, another C-minus school several blocks west, students can join the girls’ basketball team or boys’ football team. The school also hosts community outreach health clinics and immunization drives to support the health of students and families. At Erie High, a C-rated school, students can take charge of their futures with career and technical education programs that prepare them for fields as diverse as the machine trades and welding to computer programming and medical or nursing assistance.
Buses, highways, Union Station and Erie International
Erie Metropolitan Transportation Authority buses cross the neighborhood on East Lake Road and East 10th Street. Cyclists will find off-road bike paths along East Lake, too. The Bayfront Connector is the nearest highway that takes drivers downtown to the bayfront or south to Interstate 90, which runs east to Buffalo, 85 miles away, and west to Cleveland, 105 miles away. Interstate 79 is nearby too, connecting drivers to Pittsburgh, 120 miles south. Amtrak trains bound for Boston, New York or Chicago stop at Union Station on West 14th Street, less than 3 miles from Lakeside. Erie International Airport on the city's west side is 8.5 miles away.
