An up-and-coming area of rural Licking County

Etna Township was established in 1833 as part of the Refugee Tract of land in Ohio given to British citizens in Canada who had served on the side of the United States during the Revolutionary War. Until 1916, students could only get a primary school education in this town of 20,000. But this once rural area in Licking County, 20 miles east of Columbus, is quickly becoming an exurb as new subdivisions are built and businesses move in. Homebuyers are drawn to the area for its country feel and proximity to major freeways.

New development is on the way

There are a few original homes from Etna's early settling on the market, but most homes for sale are either postwar split-levels or neo-colonials in new subdivisions and large tracts of land. Prewar folk bungalows and rickety old colonials line the former cow paths-turned-asphalt streets around the intersection of Ohio State Route 310 and US Route 40, which is the township's center. Three-bedroom homes around here list for under $300,000. In late-century subdivisions closer to Columbus, three-bedroom neo-colonial homes made of brick or Hardie plank are listed for under $350,000. At the top of this market, home buyers will find sprawling neo-colonial mansions with multiple bedrooms and baths on woodsy 10-acre lots for under $700,000. John Singleton, the zoning officer for Etna Township, says there are several new developments on the way. “Two new housing developments, Broyles Farm and Smoke Creek, have been approved. Construction just started on Broyles Farm, which is slated for 172 homes. Smoke Creek is starting soon, with 170 new homes.”

Just a few blocks north of Route 40, called Main Street here, is Kirkersville Elementary School, which earned a B-plus on the school rankings website Niche. Watkins Middle and Watkins Memorial High School's adjacent campuses are two miles west. Both received B-minuses on Niche, and Watkins High recently transitioned students to the Google Classroom suite of learning programs.

Big plans for more green space

High Point Park, a small green space in the tiny downtown area of Etna, was established in 1995 in honor of local fallen World War II veterans. Singleton says Etna recently purchased 118 acres for a new municipal park that is in the planning stages. Pataskala Municipal Park is a more extensive park in the city just 2 miles north, with playgrounds, sports fields, a paved trail through the woods and a small creek for kids to play in. Cumberland Trail Golf Club is a large private club in Etna with 18 holes and a bar and grill.

Shopping in Pataskala and plans for High Point

Residents wanting to stay close won't find much beyond a Dairy Queen and a few other fast-food restaurants. However, the township has approved a mixed-use development. Singleton says, “High Point will be 200 acres of businesses, a small hospital, apartments, townhomes and single-family dwellings.” More spots are a few miles north on Route 310 in the larger city of Pataskala. Several local pubs, Mexican restaurants and family eateries operate in this small city. Visitors will also find a Kroger and the West Licking County Family YMCA.

Just 20 miles from Columbus

Etna is growing because it offers a relatively quick commute for residents who may prefer settling in the country over the city. Commuters can take the fast way to Columbus along Interstate 70 or a more scenic route along Route 40 and reach the city center in under 20 miles.
