Around Northwestern University
Along the shore of Lake Michigan, Northeast Evanston is home to Northwestern University’s park-like campus and a classic city neighborhood filled with brick apartments and classic early 20th-century homes in an urban environment with Chicago “L” trains and waterfront parks. "The university itself kind of takes over a lot of the space,” says Realtor Patricia DeNoyer with Coldwell Banker Commercial Realty. “And over the years, they have picked up some of the single-family homes and turned them into office spaces.” With the university hugging the eastern border of the community, the rest of Northeast Evanston is largely residential, save for a few businesses and the subway tracks. Still, it isn’t a clear split between residents and the campus. “The community does go onto campus because they have music and sports,” DeNoyer says. “But it’s also a great place to go for a walk—my husband and I often do that. You can access the lake there.”
Northeast Evanston's mix of condos and historic homes
Northeast Evanston sports a variety of housing types to accommodate its residents and student population. “It’s a neighborhood. It’s higher-end houses, but there’s also a lot of condo buildings and apartments there because the students need somewhere to live,” DeNoyer says. The brick condo buildings tend to line Sherman Avenue, with units selling between $100,000 and $325,000. Owners are often responsible for monthly homeowners association fees. Colonial Revivals, Tudors and American Foursquares line the rest of Northeast Evanston’s streets, dating back to the early 1910s and 20s. Old-growth trees dot manicured front lawns, surrounded by carefully landscaped gardens and winding front walkways. Street cleaning occurs once a month here, with street signs throughout the neighborhood serving as a reminder. These single-family homes typically sell between $800,000 and $1.6 million.
Northeast Evanston is highly walkable and safe for families looking to buy near campus.

Two subway stations on the Purple Line in Northeast Evanston
Sheridan Road runs along the length of Northwestern University’s campus, stretching across Northeast Evanston and linking residents to downtown, just a mile away. While the Davis Street/Evanston Metra station is downtown, residents can also catch the subway at either the Noyes or Foster stations, both located on the western side of the community. Both stations are on the Purple Line, which runs all the way to downtown Chicago, 14 miles away. Because the tracks run through the community, residents living closer to them may hear the trains as they rumble pass. Ridge Road serves as the community’s western border, which residents can use to access the closest emergency room, located at Endeavor Health Evanston Hospital, about 0.5 miles away. When traveling beyond Chicagoland, Northeast Evanston residents can catch their flights at Chicago O’Hare International Airport, 17 miles away.
Student-filled coffeeshops and casual Italian restaurants
Just down the street from the Noyes subway station, Dave’s Italian Kitchen offers a casual dining environment for a night out, with a small dining room illuminated by hanging lights and framed art covering the walls. Also by the subway station, The Coffee Lab’s armchairs and bars by the windows fill with students working on assignments while enjoying a Ube latte or one of the Filipino- or Korean-inspired pastries. The entryway next to the door is plastered with different flyers and posters highlighting happenings in the area. For grocery runs, residents can stop in Whole Foods Market, about 1.5 miles up Green Bay Road, with Jewel-Osco just half a mile up the road. In the other direction, Trader Joe’s is also about 1.5 miles from Northeast Evanston.
Northeast Evanston is highly walkable with many restaurants on Foster Ave.
The tables inside The Coffee Lab are packed with students each day.

Strolling through campus or going to the beach
Residents can stroll through the university’s campus, with pathways leading to The Lakefill, which overlooks Lake Michigan. A small footbridge connects the point of The Lakefill with the southern side of campus, where people can stop in the Block Museum of Art. This museum is free to students and the general public and features students pursuing master's degrees in the spring. Right next to the observatory, the Shakespeare Garden offers a quiet oasis of landscaped gardens where people can sit on the benches or bring picnic benches.
Off campus, residents still have plenty of parks to visit when they want to spend a day outside. Neighborhood parks like Philbrick Park sit within walking distance of homes, offering playgrounds and gardens. On the northern side of the community, Lawrence O Lawson Park features the Harley Clarke Mansion—the old 1920s residence of a light, power and gas executive. Gardens surround the historic residence and Grosse Point Lighthouse. Lighthouse Beach offers sandy shores and an access point to the water that’s not on campus. Just outside the community, The Evans at Canal Shores’s golf green is lined with 100-year-old oaks and overlooks the U.S. Bahá’í National Center, the only temple of its kind in North America.
Pathways on the Lakefill are paved and great for running.
The Block Museum of Art is a free public art museum located in Northwestern University.

Football games at Ryan Arena and downtown farmers' markets
While Northwestern’s Welsh-Ryan Arena and Ryan Field football stadium are outside the neighborhood on the Central Street corridor, there are several athletic fields on campus for those looking to support university athletics year-round. Pending the opening of the new Ryan Field stadium in 2026, the Northwestern Wildcats football, soccer and lacrosse teams will play at Martin Stadium on campus. Beyond athletics, supporters of the arts can stop in Pick-Staiger Concert Hall to watch the school’s orchestra, opera or jazz performances. In downtown Evanston, folks can peruse the stalls at the Downtown Evanston Farmers’ Market from May to November. During the summer, parks across Evanston take turns hosting the Starlight Concerts and Movies in the Park on Tuesday evenings. Bands take up the first 30 minutes of each night before the show transitions into an outdoor movie screening.
While Ryan Field is being renovated, the Wildcats play football at Martin Stadium.
Northeast Evanston's community enjoys shopping locally at the downtown markets.
