Oakton Historic District
The canopies of old-growth trees frame Oakton's quiet streets and supply spots of shade for residents taking strolls along the neat sidewalks below. The community comprises the bulk of Oakton Historic District's 1920s-era homes, which create an everchanging backdrop through varying architectural styles. These homes alternate between Tudor Revivals, Colonial Revivals, Craftsman styles and Chicago Bungalows. Hull Terrace, one of the neighborhood's most notable streets, features brick two-flat buildings sporting turrets, half-timbered facades, numerous windows and other ornate design flourishes. These are often sold as single-level condo units or high-dollar rental properties. Established condo complexes with similar build dates are also available on the outer edges of the neighborhood. The units typically sell between $160,000 and $330,000. Meanwhile, at least one two-flat building sold for over $750,000 in the past year.Short trips to South Boulevard Beach
At Leah Lomar Park, just southwest of the neighborhood, children can hop on the miniature two-car train or play in the surrounding sand pit. The park also features a sizeable playground and a paved walking trail. A mile west, James Park holds most of the area’s youth sports programming and games alongside the adjacent TOCA Soccer and Sports Center. South Boulevard Beach, a mile east of the neighborhood, is a quiet spot for Evanston residents to enjoy a day along the shores of Lake Michigan during summer. “The lake is a draw for residents in the area, and people go at any possible opportunity,” Gordon says. Meanwhile, the neighboring South End Community Center runs year-round indoor programming opportunities for all ages, from Tiny Movers Tap & Ballet to Ping Pong.Howard Street eats
Howard Street, known for its diverse restaurant scene, is situated 4 blocks south. A trip to the corridor can include stopping into Good To Go Jamaican Cuisine for traditional Caribbean fare or Badou Senegalese Cuisine for yassa and peanut stew. For drinks, Peckish Pig’s patio fills up in the evening for its frequented happy hour. A pair of shopping centers, like Main Street Commons, house a handful of grocery stores and retailers less than 2 miles west. “There are also a ton of little local grocery stores on Clark Street,” says Linda Gordon, a local business owner who lives in the neighboring Howard Street community. She also mentions that many in the area pick up groceries at Wild Onion Market, a co-op 2 miles out along the same street. Meanwhile, Lincolnwood Town Center, an indoor shopping mall 2 miles southwest, provides a robust selection of big-box retail stores.Chalk Howard Street and an annual farmers market
Gordon notes that Chalk Howard Street is a popular event in the area. “It’s a fun local festival with vendors and chalk art,” she says. The event, which takes place in late August between Paulina Street and Ashland Avenue, invites attendees to peruse 3D chalk creations from various artists while enjoying refreshments from local vendors. Downtown Evanston Farmers Market occurs 2 miles north at iTEC Lot every Saturday morning from May through early November. Those stopping by the market can purchase fresh produce and artisanal goods from more than 50 local vendors.Commuting from South Boulevard Station
South Boulevard Station is a half mile northeast, granting commuters 40-minute rides south to Chicago on Metra’s green line. Similarly, those driving can reach the city along a 14-mile drive via U.S. Route 41 and Dusable Lake Shore Drive. Flights out of Chicago O’Hare International Airport are a similar distance from the community. Northwestern University is closer to home, 2 miles northeast, as well as Ascension Saint Francis Hospital, which borders the community’s eastern side and creates some noise in the form of passing emergency vehicles. Pace Suburban Bus stops line both Ridge and Asbury Avenues for getting around locally.Evanston's magnet schools
Young students walk to Oakton Elementary School, which sits in the community’s northeastern corner and maintains a B rating on Niche. Similarly, Chute Middle School holds a B-plus rating and is a block west of the neighborhood. Meanwhile, older students take the bus to A-plus-rated Evanston Township High School. Evanston Community Consolidated School District No. 65 offers two K-8 magnet schools, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Literary & Fine Arts School and Dr. Bessie Rhodes School of Global Studies. However, the district recently announced that the latter will be closed following the 2025-2026 school year in tandem with the projected opening of Foster School, a K-5 magnet, the following year.
