Glenwood has supportive community with affordable housing in Evansville
Near the banks of the Ohio River, Glenwood offers access to major highways and Downtown Evansville. The Glenwood Neighborhood Association supports residents through neighborhood clean-ups and coat drives, as well as helping with the Glenwood Redevelopment Project, which created new affordable housing in the area. Traces of community support are also found throughout the area, from donations to classrooms at Glenwood Leadership Academy to afterschool programs at the CenterPoint Energy YMCA. The organization also plans community events like Easter egg hunts and block parties.

Residents rely on cars to get around
Glenwood is near the intersection of U.S. Route 41 and Interstate 69. “One of the biggest advantages is the proximity to major arteries,” says Doug Howie, Realtor with eXp Realty, who has worked in Evansville for about 7 years. US-41 leads north to Lloyd Expressway. The Metropolitan Evansville Transit System (METS) manages METS Micro, an on-demand rideshare service in the city.
Affordable homes dating back to the 1920s
Elm and spruce trees shade the sidewalks of Glenwood, and bushes and colorful gardens decorate grassy front lawns. The roads are wide enough to allow street parking. Most properties were built between the 1920s and 1980s, including bungalows, bilevels and ranch-style homes. “A lot of the homes in that part of town are very affordable,” Howie says. “Some of them are more project homes, so if you have someone that is looking for a house that they can fix up and build some equity, it’s a good place to do that.” Prices range from $100,000 to $140,000, although investment properties can cost $25,000 to $75,000. Caldwell Homes and Terrace Gardens is an income-based housing complex with 180 units in the neighborhood. Because of the Ohio River Levee along Evansville's borders, Glenwood has a reduced risk of flooding. While flood insurance is recommended, it is not required. There is a relatively high risk of tornadoes, with wind and storm damage covered by most homeowners’ insurance.

Recreational opportunities include Caldwell Park and riverfront activities
Glenwood has ample opportunity to get outdoors. Caldwell Park is a small park with a playground in the neighborhood. Residents can also travel about 2 miles to Sunset Park, part of the larger Evansville Riverfront Park. “We visit the riverfront to just walk, either with ourselves or with friends,” Howie says. Besides having a boat launch and the largest skatepark in Indiana, the park features Mickey’s Kingdom, a Disney-themed playground. Farther up the riverfront is the Evansville Museum, with fine art, historical and anthropological exhibits. Museum members and children three and under get in for free. The CenterPoint Energy YMCA provides on-site childcare and off-site activities like a STEM summer camp and hosts community events like Bingo and movie screenings.
