Suburban living on The Hill
Named after Evansville philanthropist Francis Joseph Reitz and its hilly terrain, Reitz Hill offers a suburban feel with nearby urban amenities. Elevated streetscapes, winding roads and distant views of the Ohio River define this western Evansville community. “The Hill has a lot of history with homes more than 100 years old and several generational owners,” says Shannon Dierlam, Reitz Hill Neighborhood Association secretary. “We find it very inviting and safe to walk around.” Residents are seen scaling the paved sidewalks, walking the family dog or heading to Francis Joseph Reitz High School at the heart of the community. “We love the Friday night football activities,” adds Dierlam, who has lived on Reitz Hill for 48 years. West Lloyd Expressway runs through the neighborhood, connecting residents to downtown, about 3 miles away.
Raised ramblers and cozy bungalows
Most homes were constructed in the early 20th century, resulting in traditional ramblers, Cape Cods and bungalows common of the era. While these designs dominate the area, two-story homes with front porches are also available. “The market is competitive, and homes often receive multiple offers,” says Suzanne Ready-Pierce, with over eight years of experience selling in the area. “And buyers love that the high school is within walking distance.” Prices generally range from the low $100,000s to upwards of $250,000. Some homes are raised to accommodate the hilly terrain, while most feature detached garages and are fronted by small lawns with paved entryways. Streets are equipped with sidewalks for navigating the rolling hills, connecting neighbors to residents and students to Francis Joseph Reitz High School at the neighborhood’s center.
