Evansville living near schools and highway access
Southside Evansville is less than 5 miles from Downtown Evansville, and is central to major highways like U.S. Route 41. “If you work in Kentucky, you get on 41, cross the bridge and you’re there,” says Realtor Yvonne Woodburn with Keller Williams Capital Realty, a born-and-raised Evansville resident. “And [the neighborhood’s] right off Weinbach [Avenue], so you’re close to the high school.” Southside Evansville is home to Lodge Community School, and Benjamin Bosse High School is only 2 miles away – convenient for families with school-age children.
Midcentury homes with grassy yards and mature trees
The neighborhood has a charming selection of midcentury single-family homes, ranging from around $55,000 to almost $200,000. These quaint bungalows, vinyl-sided cottages and brick ranch-style houses sit on modest lots with grassy yards, typically shaded by a mature tree or two. This close to the Ohio River, American sycamores, river birches and trees of heaven grow green and tall, sometimes wrapped in ivy. Most of Southside Evansville has a low risk of flooding thanks to the city’s levee system, but there are some special flood zones in the neighborhood. Properties touching those may need flood insurance for a federally backed mortgage.
Students can apply to Toyota’s 4T Academy at Bosse High
Evansville Vanderburgh School Corporation earns an overall B on Niche. It offers a school choice scholarship program, financially aiding students so they may attend participating private schools. In the heart of the neighborhood, Lodge Community (C-plus) teaches students from kindergarten to eighth grade, before they head up the road to Benjamin Bosse High (B-minus). Juniors and seniors can apply for the high school’s 4T Academy, a Toyota-sponsored program that teaches the foundations of advanced manufacturing and offers them a job opportunity upon graduation. Private options in the area include Reitz Memorial High (A-minus), which Niche ranks as Evansville’s top Catholic high school.
Local parks offer playgrounds, ballfields and basketball courts
Anthony Oates Park is a little green space on Beech Drive with two playgrounds, a swingset and basketball courts. Vann Pollack Park has another playground and some ballfields nearby. Wesselman Woods is a nature preserve with scenic woodland trails about 4 miles away. It covers 200 of Wesselman Woods Park’s 290 acres. Other facilities at this recreational hub include tennis and sand volleyball courts, a community pool and picnic areas. The park abuts McDonald Golf Club, home to three 9-hole municipal courses.
Covert and Weinbach offer food, retail and healthcare options
Southside Evansville is primarily residential, but there are a couple of local shopping centers with options for everyday errands. There’s Dollar General, Dollar Tree, Citi Trends, and some eateries along Weinbach Avenue. Next to Domino’s Pizza, the neighborhood takeout spot Happy Garden serves a traditional Chinese menu. It’s across the road from Marigold Bar, a local watering hole. IGA, Subway, AutoZone and Burger King are on the north side, on Covert Avenue. As for healthcare, there’s a clinic in the neighborhood, and the closest ER is less than 5 miles away at Ascension St. Vincent Evansville.
Bus stops and highways make getting around easy
The Metropolitan Evansville Transit System has bus stops in the neighborhood along East Riverside Drive. Residents have immediate access to U.S. Route 41, which is a straight shot to Evansville Regional Airport, less than 10 miles away. It also connects to Interstate 69.
