Downtown Homestead
Ranch-style and contemporary houses are plentiful
While most residents are renters—about 74%— Downtown Homestead has many streets lined with single-family homes, giving it a less dense feel for a downtown area. Some small apartment complexes and duplexes can be found throughout the community, too. Of the single-family homes, most are midcentury-era ranch-style and custom contemporary builds from the early 2000s. They feature anywhere from two to four bedrooms and sit close on lawns adorned with small palm trees, shrubs and flowers. Many homes feature low fences, and some homes have security bars on windows and doors. Prices range from $240,000 to $535,000. New townhouses are also available, ranging from $370,000 for three bedrooms to $515,000 for four bedrooms.
The Homestead Police Department is active in the community
Regarding crime, Downtown Homestead scores a 9 out of 10 on the CAP index, five points higher than the national average. The Homestead Police Department is active in the community, heading up several programs, including the Police Athletic League (PAL), which gives area kids ages eight through 14 years the chance to join basketball and wrestling teams; Start Off Smart (SOS), which helps at-risk residents access services to help them avoid becoming repeat offenders; and Police Explorers, which gives middle and high schoolers opportunities to learn from officers about the basics of police work and explore careers in law enforcement.Children attend Miami-Dade County Public Schools
Students can attend Miami-Dade County Public Schools, starting their journey at West Homestead K-8 Center, which scores a C on Niche. They move on to Homestead Middle School, which has a C-plus rating, and South Dade Senior High School, which has a B rating. South Dade Senior High offers magnet academies like the Professional Services Program, where students earn certifications in construction, culinary arts and automotive repair, or the Visual & Performing Arts Academy, with pathways for traditional art, music, dance and theater. Other nearby options include faith-based private schools and charter schools.Kids who want to stay close to home after graduation can attend Miami-Dade College's Homestead campus near Campbell Drive. The large public college offers more than 300 degree pathways, certifications and apprenticeships.
Many things to do inside and outside
For a day outdoors, residents head to Losner Park, which offers a shaded, ADA-accessible playground for young kids, a jogging and walking path, and is pet-friendly, so locals are often out walking their dogs. On game nights, locals head to Harris Field Park, home to the New Homestead Little League, to cheer on the kids. The park also offers a basketball court, soccer fields and the Sally Woods Barn Pavilion, a popular location of wedding receptions and birthdays. For indoor activities, the Cybrarium, which blends cutting-edge technology with traditional library services, is conveniently located in the neighborhood. It opened in 2021 and offers resources, including a makers' space with a 3D printer and VR equipment. Another favorite spot among residents is Homestead Station, a large entertainment hub located off South Krome Avenue. It opened in 2019 and boasts an IMAX theatre, a bowling alley and an arcade featuring a full bar.
Nature lovers have easy access to Biscayne National Park and Everglades National Park from the neighborhood. Residents can take advantage of the city’s new program offering trolley service to both parks. The service is free (though reservations are strongly suggested), and riders pick up the trolley at Homestead Station.
Convenient shopping options at Homestead Town Square
Residents pick up groceries at Presidente Supermarket or at Publix and Sedano’s at the Homestead Town Square shopping center. The shopping center is also a spot to indulge in retail therapy at stores like Marshalls and HomeGoods. There are many dining out options, including Mexican, Italian, Cajun and American. One local favorite is City Hall Bistro & Martini Bar, a cozy spot connected to the historic Hotel Redland and is popular for its full menu and imaginative cocktails.
Route 1 and Ronald Regan Turnpike get residents to Miami
Route 1 and the Ronald Regan Turnpike are easily accessible and connect to Miami to the north about 40 miles. However, commuters should note that the drive can take over an hour or more with traffic.
