Modello community sprawls into the Redland agricultural area
Located in the southernmost part of Florida near the iconic Everglades is Modello, a countryside suburb within the greater Leisure City community. Although the heart of Modello is located right next to Route 1, or South Dixie Highway, the neighborhood also sprawls out into the Redland farming community. “This is the agricultural area of south Florida; we don’t really have a winter, so when people get their vegetables during the winter months – tomatoes, corn, cucumbers, peppers – it’s likely they came from down here,” says Maria Knapp, a local Realtor with LPT Realty. Knapp adds that the area is also known for growing tropical fruits, such as avocados. Just south of Modello is the city of Homestead, where residents can access numerous urban amenities, and less than 10 miles east is Biscayne Bay. Because much of this neighborhood is situated in the Redland area, homes here tend to sit on larger lots, and residential streets aren’t as densely packed.

Ranch-style homes with Mediterranean and Spanish architecture
Single-family homes here are primarily ranch-style houses with Mediterranean and Spanish-influenced architectural features, such as earth-tone stucco facades and low clay tile roofs. Common property amenities in this neighborhood include paved driveways, attached garages and backyard swimming pools. Because of its countryside setting, homebuyers interested in moving to Modello can also find a number of undeveloped lots and vacant land for sale. Closer to Route 1, residents can find a handful of townhouse complexes and apartment buildings, which have individual units that tend to cost somewhere in the $400,000s. Single-family homes typically start at around $500,000 and climb into the low $1 million range.

Fresh produce and smoothies at Heritage Market
“We have plenty of grocery stores and stores for everyday living; I mean, we’ve got a Petco, a Kohl’s and lots of restaurants,” Knapp says. For groceries, residents can shop at Winn-Dixie or the Sabor Tropical Supermarket. Modello also has a Walmart Neighborhood Market that sells a range of retail items and household goods in addition to basic groceries. In the Redland area, locals can head to Heritage Market, a weekly farmer’s market, where they can browse a selection of fresh produce and enjoy a menu full of handcrafted food and drinks made with organic ingredients. Residents looking for a quick bite to eat can stop by Elote Lovers for street corn and other Latin-American favorites. A local staple and popular dining destination, the family-owned Shiver’s BBQ has been serving patrons authentic, hickory smoked barbecue for more than 60 years.

Modello is home to the Coral Castle Museum, one of the area’s most iconic landmarks. As the name suggests, this outdoor sculpture garden was built entirely out of more than 1,000 tons of coral stones over the course of 28 years by a man named Ed Leedskalnin. Approximately 5 miles south, a popular racetrack draws visitors from all over: “The Homestead-Miami Speedway is part of the NASCAR circuit,” Knapp says. “It attracts lots of tourists to the Homestead area.”
