Million-dollar mountainside homes on multiacre properties
Single-family homes sit at the end of paved driveways, some lengthy due to properties ranging from an acre to just over three acres. Depending on lot size, raised ranch and ranch-style homes can cost from around $755,000 to $1.2 million, and traditional mountainside homes with cabin influence range from about $1.5 million to $4 million. Since Hiwan Hills is a heavily forested area, wildfire risk is elevated, as it is for the entire Evergreen region.Natural recreation from Dedisse Trail to Evergreen Lake
Hiwan Heritage Park spans over 1,600 acres and includes a forested path with plaques explaining the history of artifacts preserved from the property’s past as a cattle ranch. The Hiwan Museum, which also sits on the property, housed one of Colorado’s first female doctors and can be toured at no cost. The Evergreen Nature Center also includes displays; however, these provide insights about the Bear Creek Watershed and animals that can be spotted on hikes through nearby trails. The Evergreen Golf Course, the almost 2-mile Dedisse Trail and Evergreen Lake span the 420-acre Dedisse Park. The Dedisse Trail travels west of the rolling fairways and connects to the Alderfer-Three Sisters Park, which has over 16 miles of trail. “Many visitors from Denver come for mountain biking and then go downtown or in winter ice skating on Evergreen Lake,” Evans says. “No motorized boats are allowed, so in the summer, tons of people go paddleboarding. You can rent or bring your own, but there’s a fee either way.”School choice and award-winning student organizations
Jeffco Public Schools district serves Hiwan Hills and offers school choice, given that the school has adequate space. Bergen Elementary School is the neighborhood’s zoned school. It was renamed and renovated from Bergen Valley Elementary, which earns an A-minus from Niche. Evergreen Middle School also receives an A-minus, and Evergreen High School maintains an A. The high school has award-winning business and STEM student organizations.Holiday Walk and Elk on the Shelf
Downtown Evergreen maintains an active social calendar, with many events centered around supporting local businesses. “The Holiday Walk is always the first Friday in December; we close the street, and stores stay open late. It’s very much like a scene from a Hallmark movie,” Evans says. “We have characters like Santa and Mrs. Claus; they take a carriage from downtown to Evergreen Lake and light the tree. We have a local actor who looks a lot like Will Ferrell, so he dresses as Buddy the Elf and a new event called ‘Elk on the Shelf,’ where businesses and restaurants that want to participate have this [toy-sized] elk, and participants come in and take a picture of the elk and post with a hashtag to be entered to win prizes.”Evergreen Parkway ties to the Denver metro area
Bear Creek Road branches off Evergreen Parkway, connecting Hiwan Hills to Downtown Evergreen in about a mile. Evergreen Parkway runs north and south, intersecting Interstate 70, which ties the neighborhood to Denver within about 30 miles, and the Denver International Airport within roughly 50 miles. Although medical centers are within 5 miles, Lakewood and Wheat Ridge hospitals are both approximately 20 miles away.Creekside downtown with local businesses
A Big R Stores and Safeway are located along Evergreen Parkway. Meanwhile, locally owned businesses and restaurants line Bear Creek Road in Downtown Evergreen. “We’re a small downtown set on a creek, which is very unusual for a town in Colorado,” says Larae Evans, a Downtown Evergreen board member. “We’re not an incorporated community, so we help each other out as far as a win for the local winery is a win for all of us.” Galleries, consignment stores and boutiques resembling mountainside cabins occupy storefronts, including Marmalade Artisan Jewelry and Sweetwater Boutique. Just outside downtown, JP Total Farmers Market sells fresh seasonal produce and partners with other local businesses to sell jarred products such as honey. Local restaurants include the popular western-themed bar Little Bear. “Willie Nelson used to live in Evergreen, so rumor has it that he would pop in and play at the Little Bear,” Evans says. “Another one that has great live music is Cactus Jacks Saloon & Grill. In the summer months, they have it out along Bear Creek.” Live music and theatrical performances are held in performance halls, including Evergreen Players and Center Stage.
