Northeast City
Fixer uppers and newer builds in Northeast City
Most homes are on the east side of the neighborhood, past State Route 2. Some are on the west of this freeway, though, closer to the industrial and shopping complexes. This west side is generally older, but homes in both areas were built between the 1930s and 2010s. Because of this, architecture is different from one house to the next, but properties are generally in the Traditional style. They mostly have mono-color siding facades, and their roofs are low pitched. They can have one or two stories, or they might even be a duplex. Lots are larger than counterparts closer to downtown, and backyards usually feature some trees. Small homes might need renovations, and they start at $100,000. Updated homes can have more than double the square footage, and they can reach $575,000. Some condos are on the neighborhood’s south side, close to State Route 2, and they range from $80,000 to $170,000. Homes in Birchwood are not available for sale, but these easternmost rentals are popular with military families; this area has a back entrance to the base. A railway runs through the middle of Northeast City, so nearby homes will get some noise.Close to Fairbanks North Star Borough Schools
Most students can attend Anne Wien Elementary, about 3 miles west of the neighborhood’s center. It holds an end-of-the-year picnic and gets a C-plus from Niche. Students on the east side are within walking distance of Ladd Elementary. It gets a B-minus, and over half of its students are from military families. This school is right next to Tanana Middle, which scores a B-minus. Lathrop High is about 2 miles from the neighborhood’s center, and it gets a B. Its Academic Decathlon team won the national title for medium-sized schools in 2024.State Route 2 and other freeways
Though sidewalks are rare, slowing-moving traffic and wide streets cater to pedestrians in summer. Winter storms can freeze roads, but the city salts and plows soon after a storm. Cars are more common during this season, and besides, they’re needed for shopping trips. State Route 2 goes south to Downtown Fairbanks and leads north to open spaces. Cutting through the middle of Northeast City, Trainor Gate Road is a thoroughfare that connects to most subdivisions. The Johansen Expressway runs along the neighborhood’s northern end, too, and goes to the west side of Fairbanks. Fairbanks International Airport is about 6 miles in this direction, and Fairbanks Memorial Hospital is roughly 2 miles south.Neighborhood parks along the Chena River
While Fairbanks is known for its proximity to wild, open spaces, Northeast City puts smaller neighborhood parks within walking distance. Most of these green spaces have playgrounds and, since they’re on the neighborhood’s south side, Chena River access. Residents can start at Graehl Park and follow the water east to Snedden Memorial Park and Hamilton Acres Park. The latter is right next to Fairbanks Community Garden, and since 1979, its raised beds have made the best of a 90-day growing season. The Chena River itself is known for tubing and kayaking in the summer. Ice fishing is popular in the winter. A short drive from the neighborhood, Birch Hill Recreation Area and Creamer’s Field Migratory Waterfowl Preserve have trail networks for hiking and cross-country skiing.Bentley Mall and Downtown Fairbanks
Restaurants and shops are on the neighborhood’s west side, near State Route 2. Chowder House is only a few blocks from the river, and it specializes in seafood and build-your-own sandwiches. Lat 65 Brewing Company is down the street for craft beer and cider. Additionally, locally owned stores such as The Comic Shop and Frontier Outfitters are nearby, while bigger department stores include Walmart Supercenter, Lowe’s and Costco. While this Bentley Mall area is closest to the neighborhood, Downtown Fairbanks is south and across the Chena River. Its gift and craft stores see a lot of tourists in the summer, and some of the city’s most popular restaurants are here.Events in Downtown Fairbanks
While Northeast City doesn’t have many events, residents can drive across the bridge to Downtown Fairbanks. Here, the Midnight Sun Festival crowds the streets in June with vendor booths, music and more. With about 30,000 attendees, it’s the largest single-day event in Alaska, and near-constant daylight keeps the party going for 12 hours. A month later, Gold Rush Days is a five-day event with a parade and an Old West theme. Attendees dress in Old West costumes and march in the state’s largest parade.
