Taku-Westgate is a cozy suburban neighborhood along the Chena River
Taku–Westgate is a residential neighborhood along the Chena River. The area was developed after World War II as Fairbanks expanded westward from its downtown and university corridors. Much of the housing stock dates to the 1950s–1970s era of suburban building in Fairbanks, with later pockets of teardown-rebuild development and small infill lots. “It’s known locally as the River View subdivision because of its location along the Chena,” says Realtor Nic Williams of Summit Realty Group. “You’re kind of right in the middle of everything, so commute times are great. It’s also more of a local community, compared to some neighborhoods that cater more towards military and temporary residents."
Midcentury homes, many with water access
The local housing market is mostly made up of midcentury ranch-style homes and split-levels, along with a sizeable selection of larger two-story homes on the north side. Many homes in the neighborhood back up onto the Chena River, offering both scenic views and opportunities for recreation. “You can get great river access,” says Williams, “and there’s a real sense of community. It’s one of the best neighborhoods in town for trick-or-treating, which kind of exemplifies the community spirit. I like a bit more space, but if I were going to live in town, it would be my first or second choice.” Most homes in the neighborhood sell for between $270,000 and $580,000. Flood risk is a consideration for some homes in the community, particularly along the river, which can impact insurance prices.
Chena River boating and Pioneer Park museums
Access to the Chena River is a big part of living in Taku-Westgate, particularly for the large portion of the community that lives along the river. Boating, fishing and kayaking are all popular hobbies in the area. The 3.5-mile paved Chena Riverwalk starts just east of the neighborhood, at the expansive Pioneer Park. The park is home to a playground and playing fields as well as some of Fairbanks’ most popular museums — not to mention the iconic S.S. Nenana Sternwheeler Riverboat, built in 1933 and one of the only remaining original steamboats in the country.
There's plenty of retail along Airport Way
Although Taku-Westgate is almost entirely residential, Airport Way runs along the south side of the neighborhood and becomes a commercial corridor to the east and west. Residents are within a 1-mile drive of Fred Meyer and Safeway supermarkets, as well as big-box stores like Value Village. Airport Way is also home to several highly rated restaurants, including Rack Shack BBQ and Simply Thai Drive Thru. Locals looking for additional shopping can always head downtown, which is less than 3 miles away via car.
Lathrop High offers college courses through UAF CTC
The neighborhood is part of the Fairbanks North Star Borough School District. Denali Elementary School and Ryan Middle School both have C grades on Niche, while Lathrop High School has a B. Lathrop High offers an early start dual enrollment program through a partnership with the University of Alaska Fairbanks Community and Technical College.
The annual Fairbanks Summer Arts Festival draws crowds
Pioneer Park hosts a number of events throughout the year, including the Fairbanks Summer Arts Festival, which features live performances and a variety of art workshops.
Airport Way makes it easy to get around
Airport Way is the main road in the neighborhood, connecting it to central Fairbanks to the east and Fairbanks International Airport to the west. The airport is less than a mile down the road, so it’s easy for locals to catch a flight out of town. Local bus routes and intercity connections are available in the area, but most daily travel is by private vehicle.
