Former farmland is now a northeast Fairfield suburb
Starting in the 1600s, cornfields and cattle farms stretched across Stratfield Village in northeast Fairfield. But in the late 19th century, a trolley line transformed the farmland into a suburban enclave. While that trolley no longer operates, the community continues to grow. Two golf courses and Sacred Heart University occupy the area’s rolling terrain, which sits just to the east of Lake Mohegan, a 17-acre body of fresh water surrounded by hiking trails and a beach. According to Susan Tortora, a Fairfield local of 45 years and a Realtor with William Raveis Real Estate, the neighborhood is also known for its proximity to Bridgeport, 5 miles southeast. “Even though it’s in Fairfield, a lot of people who work in Bridgeport live in Stratfield Village because the houses have more space and bigger yards compared to Bridgeport,” she says. “You’re close to downtown Fairfield and downtown Bridgeport and all the shopping centers on Black Rock Turnpike.”

Classic New England architecture in Stratfield Village
Homes built between the early 1900s and ‘60s line Stratfield Village’s smooth, asphalt roads. Bungalows and Cape Cod cottages sit on quarter-acre lots, often surrounded by stone walls. The branches of pin oak and maroon Japanese maple trees typically cover four-bedroom Dutch Colonial Revivals painted in shades of white and grey. Driveways lead to two-car garages tucked underneath vinyl-façade raised ranch styles and split-level homes. Buying here usually costs between $675,000 and $1.5 million, a range similar to a Fairfield home’s average $850,000 selling price. The neighborhood also has a few townhouses and condo complexes, with prices typically ranging from $450,00 to $600,000.

Highly ranked Fairfield Public Schools and private options
Children can attend Stratfield Elementary School and Tomlinson Middle School, both of which earn an A-minus grade from Niche. They may continue to A-plus-rated Fairfield Warde High School, where dual enrollment classes with the University of Connecticut include drawing, economics and public speaking. A Romanesque Revival church stands next to the kindergarten through eighth grade Assumption Catholic School on Stratfield Road. The Unquowa School is in a Colonial Revival-style building on the same street. Copper and glass contemporary-style buildings fill Sacred Heart University’s 300-acre campus, spread across Stratfield Village’s northernmost region. Founded in 1963, the private Catholic school offers over 90 undergraduate degree programs, like nursing, marketing and journalism. While locals may hear the crack of a baseball bat as the NCAA Division I team plays at Pioneer Park, Tortora says the school barely affects the neighborhood. “There aren’t many rental properties or apartments, so [students] don’t live in Stratfield Village once they’re out of the dorms,” she says. “Traffic in the area gets a little heavy when the kids move in, but other than that, SHU isn’t known as a crazy party school.”

Swimming and hiking at Lake Mohegan
On Lake Mohegan’s sandy shoreline, lifeguards sit atop tall white Adirondack chairs from Memorial Day to Labor Day as beachgoers float atop the calm water. A $10 season pass is required to enter the swimming area, while the hemlock tree-shaded hiking trails are free year-round. As hikers trek the dirt paths, they’ll pass babbling brooks and small waterfalls cascading over rock ledges. Tortora says locals still drive to Long Island Sound beaches despite this lakefront proximity. “You don’t move to Fairfield if you don’t like the beach. Most people try to get to one of our beaches at least once a week during the summer.” Volleyball nets, playgrounds and sailboat racks dot 27-acre Jennings Beach, the town’s largest beach, just 6 miles south of Stratfield Village.

The Fairchild Wheeler Golf Course in Stratfield Village is an amazing public golf course.
Stratfield Village has two golf courses
In the neighborhood’s southeastern corner, the 36-hole Fairchild Wheeler Golf Course was the Bridgeport metropolitan area’s first public golf course, opened in 1932 as part of the city’s work relief efforts during the Great Depression. Today, the rye grass fairway is known to host men's and women's leagues and youth lessons. Ash trees and sand bunkers dot Brooklawn Country Club’s 18-hole course, which has been in Stratfield Village’s southernmost area since 1895. Green umbrellas circle the swimming pool behind the Colonial Revival-style clubhouse, which has a bowling alley and pro shop inside. Though the club is in the neighborhood, Torta says residents aren’t guaranteed a membership. “You have to be sponsored by somebody who is already a member, so not everyone in the neighborhood joins.”
Downtown Fairfield and downtown Bridgeport are both nearby
Locals can grab groceries at Trader Joe’s or ShopRite about 2 miles southwest of the neighborhood on the four-lane Black Rock Turnpike. Chain restaurants like Starbucks and Panera Bread line the same street, and locally owned options are about 5 miles south on Post Road, Fairfield’s downtown area. Vintage lampposts and honey locust trees dot sidewalks in front of Georgian Revival-style storefronts. White linen-covered tables fill the dining room at Old Post Tavern, a seafood spot that also has a mahogany bar room with acoustic music every weekend. Next door, a red and yellow marquee glows outside the Sacred Heart University Community Theatre, which hosts comedians, ballets and movie screenings. High-rise offices and Italianate-style buildings coexist in downtown Bridgeport, where major employers include M&T Bank and St. Vincent’s Medical Center. Locals will find even more entertainment hubs and eateries in the city center. For instance, dimly lit chandeliers and vintage movie posters adorn the red walls of Ralph-n-Rich’s, an Italian spot here since 1990.
