Fairfield Township: secluded yet convenient
Four lanes of interstate are all that separate the borough of Montoursville from Fairfield Township, but the difference between the North Central Pennsylvania communities is noticeable. Montoursville is a compact collection of city blocks inhabited by 4,750 people, filled with shopping centers and rows of houses. But less than a mile north of Montoursville’s Walmart, the scenery morphs to winding highways lined with farmland, and the few businesses around include a taxidermist and fruit stand. Fairfield Township covers 12 square miles of farms and timberland, but it neighbors Montoursville and Muncy, two of Lycoming County’s main commercial areas. This location puts even the most secluded of its 2,800 residents within 5 miles of big-box stores and restaurants.
North of I-180, houses in Fairfield are more scattered and offer an acre or more of land.

Distinct lifestyles on either side of I-180
Interstate 180 divides the real estate market into two segments. South of the highway, split-levels, ranches and new traditional homes are likely to be in subdivisions, sitting on lots no bigger than a half-acre. Prices mainly vary from $150,000 to $350,000, though houses built since the ‘90s cost between $400,000 and $500,000. On the other side of the interstate, the home styles are similar, but houses are more scattered. These properties often come with an acre or more of land, resulting in prices that sometimes climb past $450,000. The CAP Index Crime Score is 1 out of 10, the lowest possible on the scale and lower than the national average of 4.

Momentum Church of the Nazarene revamps softball field
One of the first buildings constructed in Fairfield was a church shared by the community’s Lutherans and Presbyterians. Nearly 200 years later, churches remain a prominent part of the township, with more than five churches in or just outside Fairfield. Momentum Church of the Nazarene has partnered with Montoursville Little League girls softball to turn the dirt diamond on its property into a proper field with dugouts, fences and a scoreboard. The project is still in the fundraising phase, with no timeline for the renovations.

Retail, restaurants in Montoursville, Muncy
Residents head outside Fairfield to shop or eat out, but where they go depends on the side of the township where they live. From the west end, it’s closer to reach the borough of Montoursville. More than a dozen restaurants and boutique shops line Broad Street, where Johnson’s Cafe has been family-run since 1963 and audiophiles sort through the $1 vinyl albums at Sonic Ascension Records. The east side of Fairfield is closer to Lycoming Crossing in Muncy. The shopping center has big-box stores and retail chains such as Target, Sam’s Club and Tractor Supply Co. This area is where Geisinger Medical Center Muncy provides emergency care and other medical services. There is a UPMC Outpatient Center in Montoursville, but it’s limited to primary care and lab services.

A handful of green spaces are concentrated in Montoursville, and one of the largest is Indian Park. A creek flows through the park from the west side, where people play at the playground and horseshoe pits, to the east end, where a hiking trail and ice-skating pond are set in the woods. In the middle is a trio of fields that host Montoursville Little League softball games.
