What makes Point Clear a sought-after Eastern Shore community

Luxury homes and sweeping views of Mobile Bay have drawn buyers to Point Clear for almost 200 years. The affluent community of around 2,000 residents is anchored by the Grand Hotel Golf Resort and Spa, a sanctuary for golf enthusiasts and visitors seeking to slow down with a touch of Southern charm. Point Clear is also minutes from beloved downtown Fairhope and zoned for highly rated Baldwin County Public Schools, making this a community that's grown well-beyond its reputation as a vacation destination.

How locals enjoy coastal living in Point Clear

Point Clear's coastal lifestyle is one of its biggest draws. There are numerous access points to the water here, including Fleischer Pier on the grounds of the Grand Hotel, a scenic boardwalk and pier on Battles Road and beach access points off Highway 98. The Fairhope Municipal Pier and Park features a public marina and is a popular spot for fishing and sunset viewing. There's also a public boat ramp on Pier Avenue in Fairhope.

Other recreation areas in or around Point Clear are:

  • Mullet Point Park, which offers fishing and boat/paddle launches.
  • Lakewood Golf Club, a favorite for local golfers and visitors.
  • Fairhope Community Park, which has a playground and a splash pad.
  • Beach Park Tree Trail, home to over 500 species of trees and access to North Beach.
The sugar-soft white sand beaches and emerald waters of the Gulf Coast are about 30 miles away.

Why Point Clear real estate attracts buyers

Homes in Point Clear range from luxury waterfront estates to high-rise condos and pockets of single-family homes. "It's a very upscale, private area with many estate homes and larger lots," says Brooke Butler, Realtor and owner of Butler and Co. Real Estate. "Because of these large lots, people have big private outdoor areas and get to spend a lot of time outside." Subdivisions like Meadows at Point Clear or Lakewood feature a blend of New Traditional, Neoclassical-inspired or contemporary Craftsman-style builds, with many with upscale interiors.

Prices for homes here are on the higher end compared to the rest of Baldwin County. Most houses and condos are priced between the high $400,000s and high $900,000s. Opulent homes on or near Mobile Bay are often priced between the low $2 million and the low $9 million, with prices increasing as they near the waterfront. Regardless of location, most Point Clear homes are part of HOAs, with monthly fees ranging from $500 to $1,000.

Public and private school options near Point Clear

Point Clear is zoned for the highly rated Baldwin County Public Schools. Students may attend top-performing schools, such as Fairhope West Elementary School, Fairhope Middle School and Fairhope High School. Private school options nearby include Marietta Johnson School of Organic Education and highly rated Bayshore Christian School.

Where locals dine and shop around Point Clear

Much of Point Clear is residential, with a few churches and locally owned restaurants and shops lining Scenic Highway 98. The Grand Hotel has a few restaurants open to the public, like Bayside Grill and Bucky's Lounge. "Locals love going to Bucky's Lounge at the Grand Hotel and watching the sunset with a drink," Butler says. Farther north on Scenic 98, it has upscale, French-inspired southern dishes. Small antique shops like Silver Market cater to both residents and tourists.

Why locals head to Fairhope for amenities

Downtown Fairhope may be considered the heart of Alabama's Eastern Shore, offering more restaurants, boutiques and supply shops. "Fairhope is the best little place; there are so many events, shopping and dining," Butler, a fourth-generation Fairhopian, says. "I wouldn't want to live anywhere else." It's also home to the French Quarter, with chocolate shops, jazz music and New Orleans-inspired eateries. Highway 98 proper has grocery stores, health services and chain restaurants. Fairhope has an artsy vibe, according to Realtor, broker and resident Michelle Bigler with Wise Living Realty. There are year-round events such as craft fairs, farmers markets, an autumn film festival and a spring art festival. Mardi Gras, however, is undoubtedly the biggest. The Mobile Area's family-friendly celebrations take over Fairhope with parades like the Maids of Jubilee, floats, throws and parties.

How long it takes to reach destinations near Point Clear

Point Clear residents are car-dependent, with both branches of Highway 98 connecting north to Interstate 10 and Mobile, 20 miles away and south to the Gulf Coast, 30 miles away. Mobile International Airport is about 30 miles from Point Clear. Some residents may choose to go to Pensacola International Airport, about 60 miles away.
