Despite its name, Fairmont City isn't a city at all; it's a village with less than 2,500 residents that many people can easily zoom past without knowing. Made up of a small grid that comprises a downtown area, Fairmont City has an eclectic assortment of homes and amenities that make it far more than a map dot in the eastern St. Louis metro. From the World Wide Technology Raceway to a scenic historic site, this village has more to offer than meets the eye. "Folks who settle in Fairmont City are usually happy with the community and want to stick around," says Latitia Williams, a Coldwell Banker Brown Realtors Sales Associate with nearly 15 years of experience. "People get accustomed to the area; they get comfortable and don't leave."
Finding classic Americana in architecture
Far from uniform subdivisions, the residential areas of Fairmont City are a blend of home styles and sizes. Some streets feature rows of midcentury minimal traditional homes squeezed side by side, while other roads have Cape Cody styles perched on lots big enough to fit a large garden and shed. Older three-bedroom homes, like ranch styles built in the '60s, sell between $90,000 and $100,000, while more recent three-bedroom houses built in the last 25 years are more likely to command prices in the low $100,000s. However, if looking to buy in the area, be aware that homes don't go up for sale often. "Properties are few and far between," Williams says. "People who have been here for a long time are unlikely to sell, and there's not new housing moving into the area yet."

Small-town essentials and the ever-present Koke's
Fairmont City has, quite literally, the essentials of errands, from a small USPS location to the locally owned grocery store of Mi Tierra Bonita – which is also well-known in the community for the bags of fresh chicharrónes. Offering a cozy respite beneath a Budweiser beer sign on Fairmont City's Cookson Road is Koke's, a long-established local favorite. Based on Koke's old-time digs, it's not too surprising the tavern opened in 1915. Its menu is an amalgamation of tastes of Americana, like fried bologna sandwiches, and south-of-the-border entrées like burritos con carne.

Discovering history at the scenic Cahokia Mounds
The Fairmont City Community Center is connected to a small park, perfect for just taking the kids to the playground or picnicking. However, just east of Fairmont City, the Illinois terrain – typically flat seas of grass – suddenly ripples into a collection of earthen slopes. These hills at Cahokia Mounds State Historic Site are the remains of an indigenous city. There are 10 miles worth of trails, and people climb the 100-foot-tall Monks Mound – the largest prehistoric earthwork in the U.S.
On the pathway to Collinsville High
Children can attend public schools served by the Collinsville Community Unit School District No.10, starting at Kreitner Elementary, rated with a C-plus on Niche, before moving on to Dorris Intermediate School. With an overall B-minus and an A for diversity on Niche, Dorris Intermediate has both daytime and afterschool STEM programs. Students then head to Collinsville Middle, graded with a C-plus, and wrap up at Collinsville High. Well-known for its marching band, which has won several state titles, Collinsville High has a B on Niche and was awarded the National Gold Council of Excellence in 2023.
Events abound, supported by an award-winning library
The 2,000-acre archaeological wonder of the Cahokia Mounds State Historic Site is far from a one-and-done attraction; it's worth revisiting for reoccurring 5K races, kids' event days and art shows. There's always something going on in the village, from the annual Easter Parade to Monday Fun Days at the Fairmont City Library. The village library is a real draw for gatherings and events, with so much connection to its residents that it won the International Grand Prize First Place for community interaction in 2017 from Libraryaware.
Heading into St. Louis
Interstate 55 and Interstate 70 run through Fairmont City, spanning the 7 miles from the village center over the Mississippi River and into downtown St. Louis in less than a 15-minute drive.
