Historic homes and tenement houses
“What's really interesting about Fall River is that we have a whole slew of architecture styles because of the prominence of Fall River during its heyday,” Aubin says. “It was the second-highest cotton producer in the world. The amount of wealth in Fall River was astounding. Families were building these beautiful homes.” Corky Row Historic District also includes multifamily tenement houses. Prices of single-family homes in the neighborhood range from $260,000 to $400,000. "They all seem to be getting upgrades,” Conrad says. “And we are seeing the addition of many new homes and residential units.” Multifamily homes with anywhere from four to 10 bedrooms start at $201.500 and go as high as $940,000. Condos are priced between $380,000 to $391,900. Homes are tightly packed in neat grids, with little yard space. Sidewalks and crosswalks are pretty consistent throughout the neighborhood.Summer concerts at Griffin Park
Griffin Park is a 2-acre green space with a playground. "They host a city sponsored summer concert and summer lunch program.” Conrad says. The park has been a staple in the community for decades but was spruced up in 2018 with new benches and a basketball court. Kennedy Park, with tennis courts and a skating park, is a few blocks away.B.M.C Durfee High's new building
Henry Lord Community School earns a C score on Niche and educates around 800 students, from preschoolers through 8th graders. The B-rated B.M.C Durfee High has over 2,500 students. In 2021, students began the year in a new building that pays homage to the school's original 1887 building. It is the nation’s only public school to have an official carillon in its bell tower. The other tower houses an observatory. Diman Regional Vocational Technical High School is an option for high schoolers seeking hands-on learning experience in programs like automotive technology and culinary arts.St. Patrick's Day at The Corky Row Club
Founded in 1936, The Corky Row Club is the oldest Irish pub in town. It’s famous for its annual St. Patrick’s Day festivities, which includes an open golf tournament. In the summer, the club comes together for a clam boil. "The Neighborhood Association hosts a Community Day including free burgers, hot dogs, drinks, kids crafts and games and a basketball tourney with cash prizes,” Conrad says.Hopping on Interstate 195
The neighborhood’s downtown location means it’s possible to get around without a car. “I can walk to everything I need and want,” Conrad says. Interstate 195 runs through Corky Row, and residents can get around town on Southeastern Regional Transit Authority buses. St. Anne Hospital is located in the neighborhood, while the drive to Rhode Island T.F. Green International Airport will take around 25 miles. A trip to downtown Boston will take about 52 miles on Massachusetts Route 24, and Downtown Providence is approximately 18 miles from the neighborhood on I-95.
Portuguese cuisine at Fall River Grill
Fall River’s large Portuguese population is reflected in its cuisine. Fall River Grill offers a taste of Portugal with dishes like Pork Alentejana and Chicken Mozambique. Terra Nostra also serves soup, seafood and steak. There is more shopping and dining along Main Street, which is walkable from many homes in Corky Row. Stop & Shop grocer is on the other side of the neighborhood.
The story of Lizzie Borden
The most famous house in the neighborhood is the home of Andrew J. Borden. In 1892, Borden and his wife were fatally attacked, and his daughter, Lizzie Borden, was accused. While she was acquitted of the crime, the unsolved case still intrigues the country today. “They lived in a predominately Irish-catholic neighborhood,” Aubin says. “That’s also made the Bordens stand out; here is this protestant English family. But they got along with their neighbors.” The home has since become a bed and breakfast. Guests can book a stay or take a 90-minute house tour. For a spookier experience, they offer nightly ghost tours.
