Looking towards Flint's future
Flint was once considered a second downtown for Fall River, and it’s starting to rebuild its reputation as a town destination. “It's got its own community but hasn’t been given as much attention from the city,” says Patti Rego, executive director of Viva Fall River, a tourism website and visitors center for locals and travelers alike. "It’s a very walkable place with a lot of vacant, eye-level storefronts. It just needs a little love.” Art is used to uplift the neighborhood with colorful murals and crosswalks, and old buildings are being turned into housing. Flint’s strong sense of community dates back to when Fall River was an important town for the textile industry, and people came from all over the world in search of jobs, creating a diverse cultural tapestry. “You could have doctors and grocers working and living together,” says Caroline H. Aubin, the registrar and assistant site manager of the Fall River Historical Society. “They were neighbors who shared recipes.”

Homes built in the early 1900s
Fall River’s ties to cotton mills also impact the area’s housing, tenement housing that is distinctly New England. “You see them in the northeast and don’t really pay attention to them. But you see them outside of the northeast,” Aubin says. Most properties were built between the 1900s and 1960s, with some newer options constructed as recently as 2023. Single-family homes range from $135,000 to $560,000. Multifamily homes sell for between $375,000 and $982,500, depending on the number of bedrooms. Like most cityscapes, houses sit close together, but there is good sidewalk and crosswalk coverage.
Narrow streets with triple-deckers make the Flint neighborhood a closely knit area.

Caldeiras Restaurant and Fall River's diverse cuisine scene
From Portuguese and Mexican to Haitian and Chinese, the neighborhood offers cuisines from around the world. "Food is definitely central to the culture in Fall River,” Rego says. Caldeiras Restaurant serves an authentic taste of Portugal. Flint also has multiple Lebanese bakeries to choose from, like Sam’s Bakery and Mario’s Bakery. The neighborhood’s northern border, Bedford Street, is lined with even more small shops, businesses and eateries. For groceries, Price Rite Marketplace of Fall River is within walking distance of some homes. Walmart is less than a mile away on the other side of Interstate 195. Flint Village Plaza is a small shopping center with a Walgreens.

B.M.C Durfee High's bell tower
In the northern section of the neighborhood, students are zoned for Mary Fonseca Elementary, while those in the southern section go to Samuel Watson Elementary. Both schools receive C grades on Niche. Talbot Middle earns a C-minus, while B.M.C Durfee High has a B rating. Around 2,500 students started the 2021 school year in a new building reminiscent of Durfee’s original 1887 building. There is an official carillon in its bell tower, the nation’s only public school to have one. The other tower contains an observatory. Diman Regional Vocational Technical High School, which offers hands-on learning experience in programs like electricity and dental assisting, is another option for high schoolers.

Exploring the Quequechan River Trail
The neighborhood has several green spaces, including Britland Park. “There’s an outdoor fitness park to create health equity so everyone can get fit,” Rego says. "It was decorated by a Fall River artist.” Travassos Park was renovated in 2016 with a new splash pad, playground and dek hockey rink. The Quequechan River Trail runs through Flint and Niagara neighborhoods and showcases public artwork. Eleven-acre Lafayette Park has an outdoor pool, tennis courts and a skate park. ”There’s at least one big event there a year, but definitely not as crowded as other parks in Fall River,” Rego says. Lastly, there are two more small green spaces: Dumont Field Park and Desmarais Playground Park.

Fall River is part of the South Coast Rail project, which seeks to connect southeastern Massachusetts to Boston through a commuter rail. The project is expected to be completed by spring 2025. The drive to Rhode Island Tf Green International Airport will take around 26 miles. Downtown Providence is about an 18-mile drive, while a trip to Boston will take around 52 miles. Flint’s crime score is 6 out of 10, slightly higher than the national average of 4.
