The Lafayette-Durfee museum in the Lower Highlands is an historic house museum.
The historic district of Lower Highlands
Settled in 1810, Lower Highlands is a designated historic district and one of Fall River’s oldest neighborhoods. Its location along the Taunton River offers walks on the boardwalk and opportunities to learn about maritime history. “We have a waterfront, woods and parks,” says Patti Rego, executive director of Viva Fall River, a tourism website and visitors center for both locals and tourists. “You have both urban and natural beauty.” In an effort to be more of a tourist destination, Fall River started a trolley and water taxi service in 2024. Those on the trolley can stop at the Purchase Street Dining District.
Along Rock Street in Lower Highlands there are several extravagant Victorian mansions.
Homes dating back to the 1800s
Greek Revival and late Victorian are the two most common housing styles in Lower Highlands. “There’s a mix of older homes and new construction,” Rego says. “Some houses have great views of the water.” The gridded streets have sidewalks on either side and while yards vary in size, most of them have trees that shade the property in the summer. Single-family homes range from $332,500 to $735,000. Multifamily houses start at $386,000 and go as high as $1,250,000, depending on the condition and number of bedrooms. Some condos in the area have been converted from 1900s historic homes, while others are more modern and sit on the waterfront. They sell for $265,000 to $590,000.
Towne House has a variety of eateries in the Lower Highlands neighborhood.
Dining at the Townehouse Food Complex
Lower Highlands is the beginning of what Rego calls the Purchase Street Dining District, which includes the Townehouse Food Complex. The complex comprises 8,000-square-feet of space and has four different culinary concepts, including a cafe and an oyster bar. Saint James Irish Pub serves standard bar fair in a casual setting. For grocery shopping, residents can visit Portugalia Marketplace or Stop & Shop, which is less than a mile away. There are also shops and eateries sprinkled throughout the neighborhood, and there’s a development currently underway that will attract even more commercial spaces. "It’s the closest neighborhood to the new Route 79-Davol Street development," Rego says. This project seeks to better connect Fall River to the waterfront.
The Fall River Children's Museum in Lower Highlands, has splendid an fun installations.
Explore outer space at the The Children's Museum of Greater Fall River
The Children's Museum of Greater Fall River has two floors of exhibitions where kids can explore topics like dinosaurs, outer space and transportation. "In the basement of the children's museum is the Old Colony & Fall River Railroad Museum; not everyone knows about it," Rego says. Battleship Cove is a fleet museum and memorial by the waterfront. The museum puts ships, aircrafts and helicopters on display to educate citizens and honor veterans. Visitors can spend the night on a naval vessel as part of the Nautical Nights program.
Westall Elementary in Fall River strives to provide students with a safe environment.
The newly reopened Westall Elementary
After closing in 2008, Westall Elementary reopened in 2024. Currently, Westall does not have a Niche or GreatSchools score. Bicentennial Park in Lower Highlands gives residents riverfront views and war memorials.
Fishing and Pickleball at Bicentennial Park
"Bicentennial Park has a boat ramp, and people fish there,” Rego says. “It’s the beginning of the boardwalk on the waterfront.” The park also has pickleball and tennis courts. Fall River Heritage State Park is on the other side of the boardwalk. It has a visitors center and an open meadow used for events like concerts. North Park sits on 25 acres, housing sports fields and courts, a playground and a skate park. Residents like to go sledding there in the winter because it’s on a steep hill. Turner Playground Park is a smaller green space with two basketball courts. For indoor recreation, there’s the Fall River YMCA.
Commuting to Providence
The drive to Downtown Providence is approximately about 18 miles, while the trip to Boston is closer to 50 miles — which can take an hour to an hour and 45 minutes, depending on traffic. Planned to be completed by Spring 2025, The South Coast Rail project will connect Fall River and southeastern Massachusetts to Boston. The Southeastern Regional Transit Authority buses run throughout the neighborhood. On weekends, folks can ride the Fall River Trolley. Lower Highlands to Rhode Island T.F. Green International Airport is a distance of around 26 miles. The neighborhood has a crime score of 7 out of 10, higher than the national average of 4.
