A welcoming neighborhood with a historic home
Fargo may be a relatively young city, but neighborhoods like Brunsdale bring a sense of nature and history to the suburban sprawl south of Interstate 94. “Brunsdale is such a great, quiet and mature neighborhood,” says Danielle Beilke, Realtor and Relocation Manager with Beyond Realty. “Fargo has grown rather quickly, so many neighborhoods don’t have mature yards yet, but Brunsdale has beautiful yards, parks and green spaces.” These parks include Rheault Farm, a community staple that hosts year-round events, as well as the vast Brunsdale Park. Brunsdale is more than just a bucolic neighborhood, it also offers convenient nearby shopping and dining options, top schools and numerous transportation options.

1970s suburbia under shade trees
Brunsdale as a neighborhood dates back to the 1960s, and many of the homes are reflective of this period. “The home lots are a little bigger than some of the newer neighborhoods,” says Beilke, and homes include ramblers, twin ranch-style units, bi-level and split-levels in a mixture of designs. The neighborhood's age means it offers more space between homes, with trees shading patios and porches during get-togethers like summertime cook-outs. While almost every property includes at least a detached garage, these are one- and two-car units, not the larger garages found in newer developments. There are also quite a few alternative options, including apartment complexes to the north and senior living complexes and condos to the east. Condo units can sell from $110,000 to $195,000, while townhouses fall within a similar range, usually going for $155,000 to $195,000. Twin homes with a bit more space sell for between $180,000 and $255,000; and single-family homes—most from the 1970s and early 1980s—can go for $225,000 to upwards of $425,000.
Split level homes built in the 1960's and 1970's in Brunsdale have a unique charm.

Quality public and private school offerings
Most students in Brunsdale will start at Lincoln Elementary School, although those in the southwest section of the neighborhood will attend Ed Clapp Elementary. These schools receive a B-minus and a C-plus, respectively from ratings site, Niche. Regardless of which elementary school they attend, students who stay in the Fargo Public Schools system will also attend Carl Ben Eielson Middle School, which scores a B-minus, and South High School, which earns a B rating. South High also offers extracurricular activities ranging from their championship-winning football team, and track and field squads, to clubs like e-sports/drone racing and a fishing club. Private schools include Oak Grove Lutheran, with the elementary school covering kindergarten through fifth grades, while grades six through 12 will attend the school's North Campus. Nativity Elementary, part of the St. John Paul II Catholic Schools, is located just north of the neighborhood, while Sacred Heart Middle and Shanley High School sit a mile south.

A historic farmstead anchors the community
“Rheault Farm has been a community staple for years,” says Beilke, “The house and barn were built back in 1918. The 15-acre park hosts many events year-round that draw in lots of visitors.” The century-old brick farmhouse and barn are a scenic backdrop for weddings, while the picnic shelter makes it popular for company and organization events. “Santa Village at Rheault Farm, Hello Spring…Fall in Fargo is also held at Rheault Farm,” says Tony Schmitt, Park Director of Fargo Park District parks, who describes how these events draw in folks from across the city.
New courts for the latest craze
Brunsdale Park sits at the heart of the neighborhood and attracts residents from across south Fargo. Two youth baseball fields and a full-size baseball diamond host baseball and softball teams during the temperate months, and fans and players alike can grab a snack from the concession stand. Perhaps the biggest draw – the nine pickleball courts – donated by Tom and Mary Brunsdale – that opened in 2017, making it one of the largest pickleball complexes in the city. For more relaxed activities, a playground, recreational trails and a StoryWalk featuring rotating books are spread across the space.

Retail stretches along the main thoroughfares
Shopping centers line University Drive and 32nd Avenue, meaning all retail and services are concentrated just outside of the residential areas. Locals can start the day with a fresh cup of coffee from Beans Coffee Bar before heading out for their daily errands. Those looking to do some creative thrifting or re-use are in luck – Heirlooms Thrift & Gift, Dakota Boys and Girls Ranch Thrift, and Goodwill Retail Store all offer the opportunity for residents to make someone else’s trash their treasure. Hornbacher’s and Family Fare Supermarket are adjacent to the neighborhood for quick grocery stops, while Burggraf’s Ace Hardware provides home maintenance and repair needs. For a meal out, there are several national franchises surrounding the community. Established local eateries like Randy’s University Diner, with all-day homestyle breakfasts, and Doolittles Woodfire Grill, offering woodfired takes on classic American dishes, are both popular dining spots that have served generations of Fargoans.
Hornbacher's is right in the neighborhood for residents to get all the necessities.

Walk, pedal, drive or ride - tons of transportation options
One of the things that makes Brunsdale desirable is the flexibility of getting around, says Beilke. “It’s a very short distance to local retailers; there’s also a major bike path that goes right through the neighborhood.” Which means it's a highly bikeable neighborhood that is also quite walkable. On top of that, stops for MATBUS Route 14 sit around the edges of Brunsdale, so there is a public transit option as well. Many residents drive, and they can hop on University Drive on the community's east side, which is 4 miles to downtown Fargo. It connects with 8th Avenue to take folks to Hector International Airport, a 6-mile drive that usually takes less than 15 minutes. I-94 crosses the north side, connecting to Moorhead and West Fargo, with access ramps on both sides of the neighborhood. Essentia Health is only 2 miles at the furthest from any point in the neighborhood, providing 24-hour emergency care.
Residents of Brunsdale have quick access to the I-94 and other highways.

Events across the city make summer a busy time
Beyond the local festivities of Rheault Farm, Brunsdale residents enjoy what the city offers overall. This ranges from the Downtown Fargo Street Fair to Fargo’s August PRIDE festivities in the heart of town, to the Red River Valley Fair in West Fargo. Ten days of festivities stretch across three weekends in June and July, with national touring acts hitting the stage and a midway of fair food and games. The fairgrounds are also home to the North Dakota Renaissance Fair and the Big Iron Farm Show touted as the biggest farm show in the Midwest.
