Clara Barton and its suburban draws
Clara Barton is a family-friendly neighborhood just 2 miles from Downtown Fargo, bordered by the Red River and appreciated for its mature, tree-lined streets. Many of the homes have an early- to mid-20th-century charm, and most people own rather than rent, giving the area an established feel. Residents enjoy the convenience of their own elementary school in the neighborhood, and many find Clara Barton more cost-effective than newer developments.
The neighborhood has a mix of early- to mid-20th-century homes.
The kinds of homes you'll find here
The neighborhood is in one of the older, more established parts of Fargo, as it was part of the original townsite of the city. The trees shading the streets are centuries old, and many of the residences were built from the 1920s to the 1960s. "[You'll see] more of the older, what we call ramblers — one-level homes — and older two-story homes with some character," says Bruce Johnson, a Realtor with Re/Max Residential Office with 40 years of industry experience. "They are individual, one-of-a-kind homes." Tudor Revivals mix with mid-century ranch-style houses, Craftsman bungalows and Colonial Revivals. You'll find smaller attached and detached garages, along with well-maintained gardens and landscaping. The median lot size is a little over 6,500 square feet. Closer to the river, yards get a bit smaller. Still, a handful of homes have a special spot overlooking a green buffer between residential areas and the river, which provides a sense of extra space. Home prices generally range from the low $200,000s to the high $300,000s.
The neighborhood's relative affordability
According to Johnson, established areas like Clara Barton usually have lower special assessments for homeowners. These are basically extra fees for infrastructure improvements, which are more common in newer neighborhoods in the South Fargo area. The relative affordability tends to draw a particular type of buyer: "Generally younger families — first-time homebuyers, that type of thing," Johnson says.

Commuting downtown, to the airport and across the metro

Downtown is also close enough that you could walk there in under 40 minutes or bike in around 10. It's also easy to catch the bus, with several stops along the edges of the neighborhood. If you need to catch a flight, Hector International Airport is just 5 miles away. The airport supports domestic travel and also offers connecting flights for trips abroad.
Amenities, parks and events happening nearby
You can walk and bike along the river and drop a line for fishing. As far as green spaces go, Lindenwood Park is a favorite, set along the water. "It's one of the older parks in Fargo, not the oldest, but one of those more established parks that offers more amenities," says Tony Schmitt, the parks director for the Fargo Parks District. "There's a campground, a nature trail, a kayak launch and the ability to rent bicycles. We have our pond hockey event there in the winter." A pedestrian bridge also connects Lindenwood Park to Gooseberry Park in Minnesota. Other amenities in the community and nearby:
Sanford South University Medical Center is right in the neighborhood.
Shops, restaurants and services along South University Drive, including Hornbacher's for groceries, Caribou Coffee, Gate City Bank and local eateries like Luna, which serves New American cuisine.
Downtown, with its mix of cultural attractions, independent retailers, eateries, bars and breweries.
With downtown so accessible, you can easily hop over to community events happening there. The Downtown Fargo Street Fair is a decades-long summertime tradition where you can buy from local vendors, drink craft beer and take in live music.
