Clara Barton
Neighborhood in Fargo, North Dakota
Cass County 58103
A welcome mix of housing from a bygone era
One of Fargo's older and more established neighborhoods, the gridded and tree-lined streets of Clara Barton feature a more eclectic mix of homes than some of the area's newer suburbs. Whimsical peaked roofs of 1920s brick Tudor revival style homes stand tall just down the block from low-slung mid-century ramblers, bungalows and Classical revivals. Smaller attached and detached garages are featured here, and gardens and landscaping are well-maintained. Deep eaves and covered entryways are standard, offering protection and cover for dealing with the snow and ice common to North Dakota winters. Smaller ramblers and cottages under 1,400 square feet sell in the range of $175,000 to $225,000, while three- and four-bedroom homes regularly get from $225,000 to $475,000. Architecturally significant houses and those spanning across 4,000 square feet or more can reach from $550,000 to as high as $625,000.Top-tier public schools and a private option
Students in Clara Barton have a split elementary school system, attending Hawthorne Elementary School for kindergarten through second grade before heading to Clara Barton Elementary School for third through fifth. These are combined by Niche and receive a B grade. Ben Franklin Middle School gets a B-plus grade, while Fargo North High School earns an A-minus. Not only is North rated as the Best Public High School in the Fargo Area by Niche, but it’s also known for having an excellent STEM program as well as music and theatre programs for extracurricular options. Nativity Elementary is adjacent to the Nativity Church of Fargo, part of the St John Paul II Catholic Schools. After Nativity, students can continue their Catholic school education at Sacred Heart Middle School and Shanley High School, which get a B-plus grade.Fargo events have a city-wide draw
Melquist says that, with Fargo being so easily accessible, large events draw people from all over the community. This includes the Downtown Fargo Street Fair in July, a three-day festival that Clara Barton residents can be seen walking to and from. Fargo’s PRIDE festivities in August feature a week of events throughout the community. FROSTIVAL helps residents fight the winter blues, with 10 days of outdoor and indoor activities across the metro region, including in Lindenwood Park. Over in West Fargo, the Red River Valley Fair is 10 days of entertainment spread across three weekends; the grounds also host the North Dakota Renaissance Faire.Lindenwood Park is a gem in the Fargo Parks system
“My favorite park is Lindenwood Park. It’s one of the older parks in Fargo, not the oldest but one of those more established parks that offers more amenities,” says Tony Schmitt, Parks Director at Fargo Parks District. “There’s a campground, a nature trail, a kayak launch, the ability to rent bicycles, we have our pond hockey event there in the winter. It brings people out to nature and you don’t feel like you’re in town, even though it’s along the interstate.” Danni Melquist, director of marketing with Visit Fargo-Moorhead agrees, “Lindenwood has tons of amenities, great pathways for walking along the water. It also features lift bridges where you can walk across the river to the parks on the Minnesota side, like Gooseberry.” Set in the southeast corner of the neighborhood, Lindenwood is one of the most-visited parks throughout the year, drawing visitors from across the region.A nationally recognized chef and a cultural touchpoint in an unexpected location
“We have a few James Beard-nominated chefs and restaurants and they continue to be staples in the community,” says Melquist. “Fargo boasts an incredible cultural cuisine scene as well.” In an unassuming storefront in the Southside Shopping Center, the casual American eatery Luna is home to Chef Ryan Nitschke, recipient of a pair of AAA Four Diamond awards as well as a James Beard Best Chef Midwest nomination. Only a few storefronts away, La Unica provides authentic Mexican street fare and acts as a grocery, selling hard-to-find cultural staples. Duane’s House of Pizza is a Fargo staple for a quick pizza, pick-up or delivery. Hornbacher’s is a trusted grocer for weekly grocery shopping, serving the Dakotas since 1951.Walkable to downtown, with transit options
Sidewalks throughout the neighborhood connect residents to downtown, and many often walk or bike when the weather allows. Public transit via MATBUS is sufficient for most errands, but most homes still rely on a vehicle, particularly for the winters. Interstate 94 runs along the bottom edge of the neighborhood, providing fast east-west travel, while University Drive provides a straight shot to downtown and North Dakota State University. Befitting of a neighborhood bearing the name of the founder of the American Red Cross, plenty of healthcare options are available to Clara Barton residents. Sanford South University Medical Center is within the neighborhood, while 24-hour emergency care is available at either Sanford Broadway – 3 miles north – or Essentia Fargo, 3 miles southwest. Both are within 10 minutes by car, which makes the neighborhood a popular landing spot for medical professionals. Hector International Airport, for commercial flights out of the area, is 5 miles north, and is reachable by car in 10 to 15 minutes.Red River blues
Residents can walk and bike along the river and even drop in a line for fishing. For some, it’s only a five-minute walk, but this comes with the regular danger of flooding due to heavy snow melts and rain. While dikes have helped to protect homes recently, some are close enough to the river that sandbags are all that stand between them and a basement of water. Some streets in the southeastern corner also report flooding concerns in the past. Roadways, including Lindenwood Drive and Roger Maris Drive, also regularly become impassable. The FM Diversion project, currently underway and expected to be completed in 2027, should protect all homes within the metro from incidents up to 500-year floods.
