From Midwest faves to inventive modern haute cuisine
Fargoans can start their day downtown with a fresh brew from Twenty Below Coffee Company and then pair it with a freshly baked donut from Sandy’s Donuts—A Fargo staple for over forty years, Sandy's is known for their creative takes like the Mountain Dew or Orange Creamsicle donuts. The Fargo Fryn’ Pan is a 24-hour regional staple, serving generations across Fargo and Moorhead with homestyle American dishes for breakfast, lunch, dinner and late nights. Celebrating the European heritage of the region's settlers, Wurst Bier Hall offers twists on traditional German dishes, including gourmet and wild game sausages, schnitzel and bacon flights with beer pairings. Vinyl Taco brings a hip vibe with an eclectic music-themed space where vinyl records and specialty cocktails complement Mexican street food specialties with house-made tortillas. “Rosewild and Prairie Kitchen are, in my opinion, the best date night spots,” says Melquist. Jenny Buhr, Realtor with Trilogy Real Estate and President of Doorsteps Midwest, agrees—“Rosewild is super cool; they will actually cater to you and give you a seven-course meal based on what the chef wants to do for you; it’s a really cool experience.” As the day moves to night, Fargo Brewing Company transforms from a craft beer mecca into an entertainment space where regional and nationally touring bands take the stage—Buhr says they can sometimes even be heard as far away as north Fargo on a crisp evening. Residents looking to cook will have to head out of the neighborhood to Family Fare Supermarket to the north or Asian and American Market to the west to pick up necessities.Art, attractions and activities abound
From students making the trek to the downtown campus of North Dakota State University to tourists visiting the renowned Plains Art Museum to concerts at the Sanctuary Events Center and events at the Civic Center, Downtown Fargo draws a wide cross-section of folks to the city every day. The Fargo Art Alley is another top attraction, a graffitied alley of ever-changing art – the Mario Wall and the Greetings from Fargo Postcard Mural are just two photo ops found in these alleys and side streets. Tourism and onlookers can lead to plenty of noise and activity – so buyers looking for peace and quiet will want to avoid what is considered the noisiest neighborhood in the city.Something is always going on in Downtown Fargo
It doesn’t get much bigger for Downtown Fargo than the Downtown Fargo Street Fair, a three-day event that runs every July. One of the most highly-attended events in North Dakota, local artisans and vendors populate the streets while musicians and performers entertain the crowds. On a weekly basis from July through October, some of those same vendors put out their goods at the Red River Market, the city’s biggest farmer’s market. The annual Fargo-Moorhead St. Patrick’s Parade, which brings out bagpipers, Irish dancers and floats of all kinds, is a massive spring party where everyone celebrates the best of Irish culture. The Civic Center is home to year-round activities like Christkindlmarkt, put together by Folkways. They also host the themed Night Bazaar at Drekker Brewhala and Broadway Square– “They're themed, almost like circus events – people are walking on stilts, there are jugglers, balloon animals, face painting, it’s very family-oriented but adults really get into them as well,” says Donna Heck, Concierge Strategist for the Fargo-Moorhead-West Fargo Chamber of Commerce.Green sanctuaries near the Red River
A lush burst of green in the summers, Island Park features tennis courts, a play area and walking paths under the thick cover of some of the oldest, biggest trees in the city. With a recent renovation project upgrading the tennis courts, adding in pickleball courts and completely making over the Island Park pool – one of the oldest public pools in the city – the park is once again ready to host the events and activities that make it the center of summer and winter life. Just across the road, the Dike West Park is home to a 23,000-square-foot skate park, also the largest in the city. And just over the dike – one of the top sledding destinations in the snowy season, according to Buhr – Dike East Park also has a dog park for letting four-legged friends out to run, plus boating access to the Red River. A footbridge crosses over the River to the Minnesota side, and anglers cast their lines out from the banks.Limited housing options
“Downtown is busy; there are a lot of condos,” says Buhr. Apartments and condos in mid-rise buildings have become the standard in Downtown Fargo. However, some single-family houses can still be found tucked away in the corners of the neighborhood, blending in with the Hawthorne and Roosevelt neighborhoods. These single-family homes, generally including off-street parking, can go for $125,000 to $425,000. Condos range from basic one-bedroom units under 800 square feet on the neighborhood's fringes to luxury modern buildings and converted historic lofts overlooking the center of the Downtown Fargo District. One-bedroom units generally go for $80,000 to $350,000; luxury new-build condos can go for $350,000 to $775,000, with high-luxury lofts topping $1 million. This pushes the neighborhood average home value to well above the city’s average, often by $120,000 to $130,000.A busy area, but with walking and biking options
Being the heart of the city, traffic can be a concern around Downtown Fargo. It does take the biggest brunt of tourism and business traffic. Residents and visitors alike need to find a place to park – after that, the walkability of Downtown makes it easy to get to hotels, museums, parks, dining and shopping. MATBUS, the Fargo-Moorhead metro system, features bus routes in and out of downtown, and Amtrak’s Empire Builder train stops at the Fargo station. With national and international commercial flights, Hector International Airport is roughly 5 miles from the middle of Downtown, and generally driveable in under 15 minutes. While it’s nearly 8 miles away, Sanford Medical Center is often faster to get to than Essentia Health, which is only 5 miles away. However, both are reachable within 15 minutes for 24-hour emergency care.Top academic schools for Fargo students
In the heart of Fargo, students start at split elementary schools – some will attend Hawthorne Elementary for kindergarten through second grade before moving on to Clara Barton Elementary for third through fifth grade. Others may begin their journey at Horace Mann Elementary for K-2 before heading to Roosevelt Elementary for grades 3-5. Both options receive a B rating from Niche. They come together at Ben Franklin Middle School, graded a B-plus, before finishing up at Fargo North High School, which earns an A-minus. Niche rates Fargo North as the Best Public High School in Fargo Area and the Best High School for STEM in North Dakota. North also has a widely recognized arts program, including multiple concert bands and a theatre program that is part of the International Thespian Society.
