Cultural diversity on the cusp of Downtown Fargo
Teeming with diversity, the neighborhood of Jefferson-Carl provides a sense of community and neighborliness just outside of Downtown Fargo. Here, shaded streets are lined with little libraries where children can grab new books to read, while parents exchange greetings or welcome new-neighbors with plates of cookies. Sometimes they'll even plan a summer block party during the warmer months. “The city, they want people to know their neighbors,” says Donna Heck, Concierge Strategist for the Fargo-Moorhead-West Fargo Chamber of Commerce, “It’s really encouraged to get to know your neighbors and be friendly, and create that cozy atmosphere.” A multi-use community, with some industrial and commercial areas to the north and west, this neighborhood's respected schools and convenience to the heart of the city makes Jefferson-Carl a neighborhood that blends two eras: old Fargoans and New Americans along its walkable streets.
Shops and restaurants represent the many cultures
The community's diversity is represented in the variety of places to eat and shop at, in and around, the neighborhood. “There’s a cute little place called ThaiKota, a little hole-in-the-wall place with like 20 seats attached to Holliday Gas Station; it’s just on the back end of it,” says Heck. There’s another Thai food option available towards the south end of the neighborhood at Leela Thai Cuisine, which is also jsut around the corner from Rugsan Cuisine, where they specialize in East African cooking. Jay’s Smokin’s BBQ focuses on barbecue classics but also offers pizzas, burgers and other bar and grille standards. FM International Foods, along with the Asian and American Market, provide supplies from around the world for home cooking; and there's also a Cash Wise Foods and Hornbacher’s nearby for grocery runs.

Established homes dating back to the early 1900s
Jefferson-Carl is a mixture of homes that spans from turn-of-the-century farmhouses and foursquare builds to Colonial Revival designs and mid-century ramblers. “Some of them are post-war; you have the small little square houses,” says Heck. “A lot of the early established neighborhoods have detached garages.” Indeed, the pre-World War II homes of Jefferson-Carl feature one- and two-stall detached garages, although many of the post-war homes have at least a single attached bay. Single-family homes here generally sell for between $125,000 and $325,000, with investment opportunities hovering in the $75,000 to $125,000 range. The average home value here is regularly about $120,000 less than the Fargo average, making it a popular choice with both first-time buyers and investors. Condos are also available here and regularly sell for between $100,000 and $150,000. While most single-family units are owner-occupied, according to a recent study by the city, a large block of apartments is also clustered in the neighborhood's southwest corner.

Diverse public schools and continued learning
While it’s named for the two schools within its borders, not all students will attend both of them. Many will start at Jefferson Elementary, which is graded a C-plus by Niche. However, some will go to Hawthorne Elementary for kindergarten through second grade, then move on to Clara Barton Elementary for third through fifth grade – this combined elementary earns a B grade. They may move on to Carl Ben Eielson Middle School and South High School, both of which are within walking distance for students at the bottom of the neighborhood. These earn grades of B-minus and B, respectively. South is known for having a diverse student population and co-curricular activities like the Cybersecurity Club and Inner City Sound. However, some students in the northern portion of the neighborhood will attend B-plus rated Ben Franklin Middle School before wrapping up at North High School, which gets an A-minus. Agassiz, within the neighborhood, is an alternative school that offers alternative high school and middle school programs, as well as the Fargo Adult Learning Center for continued education.
Fargo South offers diverse programs to prepare students for the future.

Walking and biking around the neighborhood is simple
With a dedicated bike lane along 1st Avenue South, a bike path cutting through the middle of the neighborhood, quiet side streets and wide, shaded sidewalks, Jefferson-Carl has plenty of options for getting around. This includes MATBUS routes 15 and 18, with stops throughout the community. Across the top edge, Main Avenue is a major thoroughfare, leading west to Interstate 29 or eastward to Moorhead. Downtown is within 2 miles, as is Island Park – some residents will walk to events in these spots to avoid dealing with parking. Hector International Airport isn’t much further – roughly 5 miles and generally a 10-minute drive or less. Essentia Health, 3 miles south, provides 24-hour emergency care and is generally less than a 10-minute drive.

Nearby parks for all seasons
Jefferson Park and McCormick Park offer green space and playgrounds for kids to get their energy out. Attached to Jefferson Elementary School, the Jefferson Skating Rink gets flooded in the winters for free skating and pick-up hockey games, and an attached warming house provides a spot to warm up after an ice session. Some will head east to Island Park to cool down in the public Island Park Pool – under renovations and reopening in 2025 – or use one of the numerous tennis courts.
McCormick Park features a basketball court, picnic tables, playground, and recreational trails.

Planting seeds for the future
Tucked away by McCormick Park, the Arbors Garden is one of the numerous community gardens across Fargo run by Growing Together Community gardens. Those who work in the garden don’t just enjoy interacting with their neighbors but can also earn a share of the garden's harvest. It doesn’t just benefit the local community either, as the combined gardens across the city regularly send thousands of pounds of fresh produce to food pantries across the city.
Cultural events and citywide celebrations
While block parties are common, residents of Jefferson-Carl celebrate several events throughout the year centered on their cultural heritages, like the Somalia Cultural Heritage Celebration held in nearby Broadway Square. Island Park is home to the two-day Island Park Show, where local entertainment provides the soundtrack to over 100 artisans showing off everything from metalwork creations to photography and porcelain sculpture. The Downtown Fargo Street Fair brings out the crowds in the summer, while Frostival – with events in downtown, at Island Park and in other nearby spots – breaks up the winter monotony.
