Grow and downsize without leaving Lewis and Clark
“Each neighborhood has a variety of housing options depending on the block you’re on,” says Donna Heck, Concierge Strategist with the Chamber of Commerce. This is abundantly clear in Lewis and Clark, where the compact 1950s cottages in the northern end–some with less than 900 square feet of space–give way to ramblers and bi-levels offering over 2,000 square feet of living space to the south. This allows families to grow and downsize as needed without leaving the neighborhood. Many homes here come with detached one- and two-stall garages along with outside hook-ups to pre-heat vehicles in the winter. Old-growth elms and maples stick up above the rooflines, offering shade to fenced backyards. Two-bedroom homes sell for $150,000 to $250,000, while those with three or more bedrooms can get from $190,000 to $400,000.Great convenience by foot, by bus or by car
Lewis and Clark is rated as one of the most walkable neighborhoods in the city. From the middle of the community, all three schools, a grocery store, houses of worship and restaurants are within a third of a mile and are linked by wide, well-maintained sidewalks. It’s also a somewhat bikeable area, with quiet side streets, despite not having dedicated lanes or paths. The MATBUS offers service along routes 14 and 15 throughout the neighborhood, but most households still have at least one vehicle for winter use. Downtown Fargo is 3 miles away, or less than a 10-minute drive. Interstate 94 runs along the neighborhood's southern edge, west of West Fargo and the North Dakota plains, and east of Moorhead, but does not impact noise levels in the southern end. The trade-off is I-94 does provide a quick route to Hector International Airport, with the 7-mile drive taking 10 minutes or less. Sanford South University Medical Center is on the neighborhood's eastern edge and provides daytime urgent care and specialty health care services, while Essentia Health on 32nd Avenue, just under 3 miles southwest, is the closest 24-hour emergency care center.Full pipeline of schools within walking distance
With Lewis & Clark Elementary School within the neighborhood, some students start their schooling simply by walking across the street from their homes. Lewis & Clark Elementary gets a C-plus from Niche, while Carl Ben Eielson Middle School, along the northern border of the neighborhood, is graded with a B-minus by the site. South High School is just to the west of the neighborhood and earns a B grade overall, including an A-minus for diversity. Just east of the neighborhood, attached to Nativity Church of Fargo, Nativity Elementary School is the closest primary school in the St John Paul II Catholic School system. Students can continue their private Catholic education at Sacred Heart Middle and Shanley High School. Oak Grove Lutheran Elementary and Oak Grove Lutheran North Campus also offer education from kindergarten through twelfth grade. For adults and youth seeking higher education opportunities, North Dakota State University is also just 3 miles north.Frostival gets residents out in the dead of winter
Nearby Lindenwood and Island Parks host events throughout the year. Island Park is perhaps the most well-known park in the city, according to Jenny Buhr, Realtor with Trilogy Real Estate and President of Doorsteps Midwest. In addition to the annual Island Park Show with over 100 local artists and crafters, she mentions they do weekly Yoga in the Park and an annual memorial service at the Angel of Hope statue. Lindenwood hosts parts of the annual Frostival festival too, including the pond hockey tournament. This series of events, which lasts for over two weeks, helps Fargoans beat the winter blues and spend time with each other throughout the dead of winter.Get outdoors within Fargo city limits
The elementary school isn’t just home to students; it’s also home to the baseball and soccer fields, ice rink, playground and basketball court that make up the Lewis & Clark Park. A mile east of the neighborhood, Lindenwood Park features an open nature area with trails and access to the Red River. A kayak launch lets paddlers get into the river, and anglers can fish from the banks or the bridge that crosses over into Minnesota. Lindenwood Park also has a campground, allowing locals to camp under the stars without leaving the city.Top-tier dining and shopping at West Acres Mall
The Lewis and Clark neighborhood is also home to the Southside Shopping Center, where tucked away between retailers and services, James Beard-nominated Chef Ryan Nitschke turns out modern American cuisine at Luna. It’s fine dining but with a distinct North Dakota twist, Heck says, “The thing about any place in our community, you’ll feel comfortable going in in a suit and a tie, sitting next to somebody in jeans, a flannel shirt and a down vest. You can dress that way and go anywhere and feel comfortable, you will not feel out of place!” The menu reflects this, focused on Midwest flavors using local ingredients. A few doors up, La Unica serves up authentic Mexican dishes. Residents can grab groceries at Hornbacher's, which is less than a block north of the two restaurants. Only 2 miles down 17th Avenue, West Acres Mall brings together over 100 retailers and services, along with entertainment and activities for the cold winter months.Houses of worship
Residents can walk to church for worship, with several houses of worship located in and around the neighborhood. This includes First Baptist Church in the center of the neighborhood and the Tri-City Haitian Ministry Worship Center in the northern end. The Nativity Church of Fargo, part of the Catholic Diocese of Fargo, is just across University Avenue.
