Maple Valley
Neighborhood in Fargo, North Dakota
Cass County 58104
Modern design with sensibilities to counter North Dakota’s weather
An extensive range of homes has helped to attract buyers to Maple Valley. Many newer suburbs feature nearly identical homes, but the neighborhood offers a mix of twins, linear bi-levels with protruding garages, conservative contemporary homes and custom modern estates. Some features are common - peaked roofs poke up to shed snow and ice in the winter, while vinyl siding offers durable protection. Stone, wood and shake accents help make design features and flourishes pop, while every home features an attached garage for storing cars, watercraft, recreational vehicles and snow removal tools. Lots where residents have to bring in their own builders sell for $75,000 to $115,000. Twin homes range from $235,000 to $275,000, and often come with privacy fencing separating conjoined properties. Single-family units with two to four bedrooms and two-car garages sell for between $270,000 and $380,000, while those with three or more bedrooms and three or more garage stalls regularly get from $340,000 to $625,000. Unique estates and custom-built homes, often with a footprint of 4,500 square feet or more, along with six bedrooms, sell for between $1.1 million and $1.6 million. While HOAs are common in Maple Valley, not every home falls within one.Cars are a necessity in Maple Valley
Public transit is limited across the Fargo metro and non-existent in Maple Valley. “Most people drive their personal vehicles,” says Wall. Commutes are easy, he says - “nearly all of the area’s jobs are located in either Fargo or Moorhead, so in general, most drives are less than 15 minutes.” Downtown Fargo is roughly 7 miles away, easily accessible by Interstate 29, which runs along the neighborhood's western border. The route continues north to Hector International Airport – while it’s nearly a 10-mile drive, the interstate keeps it under 20 minutes. Essentia Health is the nearest 24-hour emergency medical care center, 3 miles north, while Sanford Medical Center is 6 miles northwest – both take roughly 10 minutes to drive to.Leading public and private schools for athletes, academics and artists
Maple Valley students in the Fargo Public Schools system will start at Centennial Elementary School, which gets a B from Niche, before moving up to Discovery Middle School and Davies High School, both of which earn an A-minus grade. Opened in 2011, Davies gets an A grade as well for Sports and Clubs and Activities – Niche names it the best high school for athletes in the Fargo area, and there are over 40 extra-curricular clubs and activities to offer students a well-rounded experience. A quick walk across the street for residents on the eastern border, Sacred Heart Middle and Shanley High School share a campus. These are the only secondary schools in the St John Paul II Catholic Schools system; the closest of three elementary schools is Nativity Elementary, 6 miles to the northeast.Freshly brewed coffee to kick off the day and family-friendly dining
“Frank’s Lounge is likely one of the most recognizable places in the area! Frank’s is a bar and restaurant with a great atmosphere that is perfect for a get-together with friends or a date night,” says Wall. Frank’s offers standard tavern fare but with some twists thrown in, like Wonton Pickles. Residents can start their day at Red River Coffee, the first independent coffee company in Fargo – woman-owned since 1985, where they turn out creative coffee-based drinks while serving-up pastries and simple breakfasts and sandwiches. Kingpinz Social and Suite Shots combine dining and family-friendly activities – enjoy burgers and bowling or wings at the driving range. Both ALDI and Cash Wise Foods Grocery provide convenient grocery stops, while Walmart meets household needs.Events highlight the folkways of the Fargo community
While neighborhood block parties are a common summer event, residents from across the metro come together in the downtowns of Fargo and West Fargo to enjoy regional events. “The one that is attended by most of the city is the Red River Valley Fair; it’s the largest fair in North Dakota and has been going strong for over 100 years!” says Wall. The Folkways organization doesn’t date back that far, but they put on signature events that draw residents across the seasons, from the Red River Market to Night Bazaars - their Christkindl Markt is a highlight of the holiday season. In the darkest depths of winter, the city celebrates Frostival, fighting the winter blues by spreading events across town, from sledding to snow volleyball. Residents get out, enjoy hot chocolate around blazing fires, and make sure that below-freezing temperatures don’t dampen the sense of community.Indoor and outdoor opportunities keep residents active
Maple Valley residents are spoiled by choice when it comes to parks and recreation. Three pocket parks—Prairie Farms, Silverleaf, and Maple Valley Park—feature play areas and green space for children and families to burn off energy or friends to have a frisbee toss. Maple Valley Park also has two small manmade ponds that sometimes attract waterfowl. Wall says that nearby Legacy Park, with a full-sized basketball court, is very popular, as is the Davies Recreational Pool. To the west, the Fargo Parks Sports Center at the Sanford Sports Complex provides year-round recreation with indoor pickleball courts, a full-sized turf file, a fitness center and more, so Fargoans can keep active through the dark and cold winter months.Local parishes offer touchpoints for a range of faiths
The towering spire of the Saints Anne and Joachim Catholic Church rises above the neighborhood to the northeast, one of three major churches in or adjacent to the neighborhood – the Fargo Seventh-day Adventist Church and Shepherd of the Prairie are located within walking distance for most residents. Saints Anne and Joachim is adjacent to the headquarters of the Catholic Diocese of Fargo and is the primary location for events like parish picnics and holiday celebrations.
